
Michigan Rallies for Midweek Win at Central Michigan

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. -- Three hits apiece from junior Ako Thomas, sophomore Christan Bullock, and freshman Jordan Nwogu pushed the University of Michigan baseball team to a 9-2 non-conference win at Central Michigan on Tuesday (May 8) at Keilitz Field.
Michigan put runners on base in all but one inning, and put the leadoff man on base seven times. Thomas, Bullock, and Nwogu led the charge as the Wolverines totaled 12 hits, including four doubles.
The Maize and Blue got on the board in the top of the first, taking advantage of a leadoff single by Thomas and a sacrifice fly from junior Jonathan Engelmann.
Back-to-back doubles in the bottom of the first inning tied the score at 1, but Michigan answered with two runs in the top of the second to regain the lead, 3-1. Nwogu led off the inning with a triple to the right-center field gap, and an RBI single from Bullock quickly sent him home for a one-run edge. Bullock then stole second and took third on the overthrow before an RBI groundout allowed him to score and put Michigan up by two.
Michigan plated two more runs in the top of the fifth on an RBI double from Engelmann, and added a run in the seventh to extend the its lead to 6-1.
Despite a five-run lead going into the ninth, the Wolverines added three insurance runs in their last at-bat pad their lead, 9-1. Thomas jumpstarted the inning with a single down the third-base line, and a walk to sophomore Dominic Clementi pushed him to second. Engelmann then reached on an infield error that loaded the bases, and a sacrifice fly off the bat of freshman Jesse Franklin scored Thomas and allowed Clementi to take third. A pickoff play at first followed for the second out of the frame, but Nwogu and Bullock kept the inning going with back-to-back doubles for an eight-run lead.
After surrendering the run in the bottom of the first, the Michigan pitching staff held the Chippewas scoreless over the next seven innings before Central Michigan scored its second and final run in the bottom of the ninth.
Freshman Angelo Smith earned his first career win in the effort with four complete innings of relief. He scattered just three hits and struck out two.

Michigan (30-14) will return to action on Wednesday (May 9) for a midweek non-conference matchup at Michigan State. First pitch against the Spartans is set for 3 p.m. in East Lansing, Mich.
