The University of Michigan women's lacrosse team (5-6, 1-1 B1G) will host the No. 2-ranked Maryland Terrapins (8-1, 1-0 B1G) Saturday (March 31) at 3 p.m. at U-M Lacrosse Stadium. The game is the back-half of a lacrosse doubleheader with the men's team, which also will host Maryland (noon).
WOLVERINE BITES
• Michigan rebounded from a loss at Northwestern last Friday (March 23) with a 14-7 win over Detroit Mercy two days later. Graduate student Bianca Brueckner had a career-high six points, which is tied for third all-time at Michigan for points in a single game. She has scored in every game in which she has played this season (10 of 11) and has 14 goals.
• Junior Adriana Pendino matched her career high of five points against UDM, when she finished with four goals and one assist.
• As a team, the Wolverines were perfect on clear attempts in the win (19-for-19). Michigan's five team assists mark a new season high for the Maize and Blue, while its 13 turnovers are its second-lowest mark in that category this season.
• Defensively, junior Maggie Handlan was responsible for a career-high three caused turnovers and added two ground balls. Erin Daly earned a career high in draw controls with four.
• In three of Michigan's five victories this season, the Wolverines have held their opponents to four goals or fewer -- Butler (W, 12-2), Canisius (W, 14-3) and Central Michigan (W, 12-4). The two goals allowed against Butler rank third in program history for fewest goals allowed in a game. The exception came in Saturday's 9-7 victory over Ohio State.
• Adriana Pendino has scored three or more goals in a game six times this season.
• Bianca Brueckner is the only Wolverine to score in all games played this season as she has tallyied one goal in each of the 10 games she has appeared in, including the career-setting game versus UDM. She has played in 10 of 11 games this season and has 19 total points, with 14 goals and five assists.
• Freshman Caitlin Muir has started each of the last eight games after missing the first three contests of the season due to injury. She has scored at least two goals in four of U-M's last five games, with multiple points in all five.
• Molly Garrett continues to lead Michigan in draw controls this season, winning 32 and moving her into a tie for seventh place on Michigan's all-time top 10 for draw controls in a single season, while her 50 career draw controls rank fourth in program history, seven ahead of current senior Mae Tarr (43).
• Junior goalie Mira Shane has started each of the last five games in cage for Michigan. Overall, she has seen time in nine of 11 games this season, recording a goals-against average of 9.86 and a save percentage of .417. Her single-game save percentage of .600 against Central Michigan ranks fourth in the program record book, as she made six saves and allowed just four goals in 60 minutes.
Scouting Maryland
Maryland enters play following a 15-12 victory over No. 4 James Madison last weekend, which improved the Terrapins' record to 8-1 on the season. The win marked Maryland's fourth victory over a top-10 opponent this season and second over a top-five squad. The Terps have faced ranked foes in six of their nine games this season, posting a 5-1 record.
The Terps are led in scoring by Megan White (46 goals, 10 assists), Caroline Steele (26 goals, seven assists) and Jen Giles (25 goals, 12 assists). While Brindi Griffin has also been a goal distributor with her eight assists to complement seven goals.
The Series
Michigan and Maryland have met three times in program history, and the Terps have won all three. This will be the second game played in Ann Arbor; Maryland claimed the first contest on April 23, 2016, by an 18-8 score.
