PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- The University of Michigan baseball team's ninth-inning rally came up short on Saturday (Feb. 17) as the Wolverines dropped the second game of a three-game series to Army by a 4-3 score at First Data Field.
Michigan started the scoring in the bottom of the third on a solo home run from Miles Lewis, and tacked on another run in the fourth when Lewis drew a bases-loaded walk.
Following two scoreless innings, the Wolverines' two-run lead was erased when Army took advantage of a Michigan error and a passed ball, and cleared the bases with a triple to tie the game at 2.
Army added another run in the top of the eighth for the Black Knights' first lead of the series and tacked on one more in the ninth for a 4-2 lead.
Down by one in the bottom of the ninth, sophomore Dominic Clementi jump-started a Michigan rally with a one-out double down the left-field line and freshman Jesse Franklin followed with a walk to put two men on base. After a Jimmy Kerr strikeout, a walk to redshirt freshman Marcus Chavez loaded the bases with two outs. Sophomore Christan Bullock then beat out an infield RBI single to score Clementi and brought the Wolverines within one run. Despite the late rally, a strikeout ended the game and left the tying and go-ahead runs on base.
Michigan stranded 15 runners in the loss but out-hit Army, 11-9. The Wolverines also committed two errors.
Sophomore left-hander Tommy Henry started on the mound for Michigan and tossed five scoreless innings before leaving the game. He allowed just three hits in his first career start and struck out five with no walks.
Junior William Tribucher threw three innings of relief and took the loss, despite allowing just one earned run; he struck out six and walked one.
Redshirt sophomore Benjamin Keizer and junior Jack Bredeson combined to close out the ninth. Keizer faced four batters and struck out two, but an unearned run scored before Bredeson got a strikeout to end the inning.
The Wolverines and Black Knights will play the rubber match of the series on Sunday (Feb. 18). First pitch is set for 10Â a.m. at First Data Field at the New York Mets' Spring Training Complex in Port St. Lucie, Florida.
