
Michigan Falls to No. 22 Marquette to Finish Road Swing

MILWAUKEE, Wis. -- The University of Michigan women's basketball team fell behind early to No. 22-ranked Marquette and were unable to make up the deficit in an 85-74 loss on Sunday afternoon (Dec. 2) at Al McGuire Center. Michigan outscored the Golden Eagles, 26-11, in the fourth quarter, but could not completely close the gap.
Michigan had four players in double figures as senior Nicole Munger, freshman Naz Hillmon and sophomore Priscilla Smeenge each went for 12 points. Munger hit four triples in the first half, with Hillmon going 6-for-6 from the floor and Smeenge reaching double figures for the first time in her career. Senior Hallie Thome chipped in 11 points. Â
U-M grabbed a 12-8 lead on a basket from Thome with 6:17 left in the first quarter, but the Golden Eagles went on a 16-2 run over the next three minutes for a 24-14 advantage with 3:19 on the clock. Hillmon stopped the run with a bucket at the 2:03 mark but Marquette held a 26-16 lead after the first 10 minutes.
Michigan climbed back within 12 points, 33-21, on Munger's third triple at the 7:21 mark of the second quarter before Marquette answered with seven of the next nine points for a 40-23 lead just two minutes later.
Marquette hit the break with a 52-32 advantage, connecting on eight three-points and outrebounding Michigan, 19-11, over the first two quarters. The Golden Eagles then outscored Michigan, 22-16, in the third quarter.
Michigan opened the fourth quarter on an 8-4 run on layups from Thome and Hillmon, a triple from sophomore Hailey Brown and a free throw from junior Kayla Robbins to bring the score to 78-56. U-M drew five Golden Eagle fouls over the first 2:53, culminating in a Marquette timeout at the 7:07 mark.
Freshman Emily Kiser converted a three-point play with 4:08 left and Smeenge scored eight straight, bringing Michigan back within 14 points, 83-69, with 2:06 remaining.
Michigan continued its late push, getting another triple from Smeenge and two more free throws from Kiser to complete its scoring. Â
The Maize and Blue will return to Crisler Center on Thursday (Dec. 6), when the Wolverines host LIU Brooklyn at 7 p.m.
