
Michigan Jumps Out to Big Lead, Rolls Past LIU Brooklyn

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's basketball team held LIU Brooklyn to one point in the first quarter and led by as many as 49 points in an 83-38 rout of the Blackbirds on Thursday evening (Dec. 6) at Crisler Center.
Freshman Naz Hillmon led the way for the Maize and Blue, turning in the first double-double of her career with 24 points on 10-for-11 shooting and 10 rebounds. Senior Hallie Thome (11) and junior Akienreh Johnson (10) joined her in double figures; in total, 11 Wolverines scored in the contest. Michigan tied a season high with 60 boards in the contest and totaled 19 assists, led by freshman Amy Dilk's six helpers.
U-M held the Blackbirds off the scoreboard for the first 8:29 of the game, racing out to a 23-0 lead. LIU Brooklyn called a timeout with 6:30 left in the first quarter after Michigan scored the first nine points, courtesy of five from Thome and layups from Dilk and senior Nicole Munger.
LIU Brooklyn finally got on the board in the first quarter, thanks to a made free throw with 1:31 remaining. Michigan scored another four points for a 27-1 lead after the first quarter.
The Maize and Blue outscored the Blackbirds, 21-18, in the second quarter to take a 48-19 lead at the break. Hillmon scored 14 points on 6-for-6 shooting, with Thome chipping in 10 points. The Wolverines shot 47.7 percent (21-for-44) from the floor and held a 31-10 advantage on the glass.
U-M kept the Blackbirds scoreless for the first 3:30 of the third quarter, opening on a 7-0 run behind seven free throws from sophomore Deja Church, Dilk and Thome, along with a hanging jumper from Munger.
Michigan emptied the bench in the fourth quarter and outscored LIU Brooklyn, 13-6. U-M led by as many as 49 in the frame, taking that lead on a jumper from freshman Ariel Young with 3:23 left.
Michigan will be back in action on Sunday (Dec. 9) , when the Wolverines travel to Rochester, Michigan, to take on Oakland. Opening tip is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Athletics Center O'Rena.
