ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's basketball team (0-0) will kick off the 2018-19 campaign by hosting Mount St. Mary's (1-0) on Friday (Nov. 9) at Crisler Center. Tip is set for 7 p.m., and the first 500 fans receive a free T-shirt.
• Friday will mark the fifth straight season that U-M is starting a new season at home. U-M is 5-1 in season openers under head coach Kim Barnes Arico, winning the last four.
• Michigan received votes in both polls to start the season, receiving nine points in the Associated Press poll and 53 in the USA Today Coaches Poll. The Big Ten coaches picked Michigan to finish third in the league.
• Senior Hallie Thome enters her senior season ranked No. 12 among returning Division I players (for 2018-19) in career points with 1,679, good for fifth in Michigan history. Thome also has 685 career rebounds, making her one of three players in school history with 1,600 points and 600 rebounds. She joins Trish Andrew and Jennifer Smith in that club. For the second straight season Thome made the watch list for the Lisa Leslie Award, given to the nation's best center. She is on pace to graduate second in career points and could become the first player in school history to have 2,000 career points and 1,000 career rebounds.
• Michigan will look to replace its all-time leading scorer with the graduation of Katelynn Flaherty, who scored 2,776 points during her career. U-M brings back 64 percent of its scoring from last year's team that averaged 74.9 points per game. Seniors Hallie Thome (17.4 ppg) and Nicole Munger (9.1 ppg) lead the way, with sophomore Hailey Brown (9.0 ppg) back as well. Sophomore Deja Church averaged 7.0 points per game last season, with juniors Kayla Robbins (3.5 ppg) and Akienreh Johnson (3.8 ppg) returning as U-M has seven of its top eight scorers back.
• U-M welcomes a five-member freshman class in Naz Hillmon (Cleveland, Ohio), Amy Dilk (Carmel, Indiana), Ariel Young (Tallahassee, Florida), Danielle Rauch (Syracuse, New York) and Emily Kiser (Noblesville, Indiana), along with graduate transfer Taylor Rooks (Bridgewater, New Jersey). The freshman class was ranked No. 12 by ESPN, the highest-rated recruiting class in U-M history.
• Mount St. Mary's (1-0) is coming off a 9-20 season, going 6-12 in Northeast Conference (NEC) play in 2017-18. The Mount brings back eight players from last year's squad, including All-NEC third teamer and the conference's Most Improved Player Juliette Lawless, along with All-Rookie Team member Daly Sullivan. Mount St. Mary's faced Washington College on Tuesday (Nov. 6) to kick off the season, recording a 74-50 win.
