ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's basketball team used a balanced attack and a stifling defense to knock off Mount St. Mary's, 88-40, in its season opener on Friday evening (Nov. 9) at Crisler Center. U-M held the Mountaineers to just 11 points in the second half to take control.
Senior Hallie Thome recorded a double-double with 25 points on 9-for-14 shooting to go with 10 boards. Sophomore Hailey Brown turned in a 14-point, seven-rebound performance. Senior Nicole Munger hit four triples in the contest for 12 points, with freshman Naz Hillmon putting in 10 points off the bench. Michigan shot 51.4 percent (36-for-70) from the floor, while holding the Mountaineers to 24.4 percent (11-for-45). U-M held a 46-26 advantage on the glass.
The first quarter was a back-and-forth affair, which featured four lead changes and four ties during the first 10 minutes.
Michigan opened the second quarter on a 9-2 run for a 31-19 lead, forcing a Mount St. Mary's timeout with 6:24 left in the frame. Thome had four points, Munger a triple and Brown two points during the spurt. The Wolverines kept pushing the issue in the quarter, leading by as many as 18 points after sophomore Deja Church hit a three-pointer as the shot clock was winding down with 3:02 remaining.
U-M hit the half with a 43-29 advantage after Mount St. Mary's found the bottom of the net from three-point range as time expired. Thome led the way for the Maize and Blue in the first half, going for 19 points on 7-for-11 shooting and six boards. Brown chipped in 12 points and five rebounds as U-M got points from six different players in the first 20 minutes.
The Wolverines blew the game open in the third quarter, outscoring Mount St. Mary's, 31-8. Michigan made 12-of-17 shots in the period, led by Munger's nine points on three triples. Her final three-pointer of the quarter beat the horn, to giving Michigan a 74-37 lead after three.
Mount St. Mary's scored just three points in the final frame as U-M cruised over the final 10 minutes. All 13 Wolverines in uniform saw action as Michigan led by as many as 50 points down the stretch.
U-M will hit the road for the first time this season on Thursday (Nov. 15) at 7 p.m., when the Wolverines travel to Kalamazoo to take on Western Michigan at University Arena.
