CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- A solo home run off the bat of junior Drew Lugbauer was not enough on Saturday (June 3) as the No. 24-ranked University of Michigan baseball team fell by an 8-1 score to regional host and No. 2-seeded North Carolina in the loser's bracket of the NCAA Regional at Boshamer Stadium. With the loss, the Wolverines were eliminated from the NCAA Tournament.
With Michigan serving as the home team for the contest, lefty starter Michael Hendrickson toed the rubber in the top of the first with a perfect 1-2-3 inning.
The Wolverines were also retired in order in the first, but the Tar Heels were the first to put a man on base in the top of the second with a leadoff walk. Hendrickson then surrendered the first hit of the day, but a fielder's choice ended the inning with nothing hurt.
Junior Drew Lugbauer led off the bottom of the second with a solo shot well over the wall in centerfield, forcing a 1-0 Michigan lead. Sophomores Nick Poirier and Jonathan Engelmann also reached base in the second with back-to-back infield singles, but the Wolverines were unable to extend the lead further.
Neither team scored again until the top of the fifth, when UNC rallied for three runs to take a lead. Free bases were the storyline of the inning, as the Tar Heels picked up just one hit but took advantage of two walks and two hit batters for a two-run lead.
The Tar Heels added three more runs in the sixth and two in the seventh to surge ahead, 8-1.
Despite putting men on base in five of the nine innings played, Michigan was unable to convert any more runs through the remainder of the contest.
The 8-1 loss marks the final game in the Maize and Blue for seniors Mac Lozer, Harrison Wenson, Michael Brdar, Johnny Slater, Jackson Lamb and Keith Lehmann. Through four years, the group has contributed to four winning seasons, a 147-92-1 overall record, one Big Ten title and two NCAA Tournament appearances.
No. 24-ranked Michigan ends the season with a 42-17 record, which marks its first 40-win season since 2008. The at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament was the Wolverines' first since 2007.
