ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Junior left-handed pitcher Oliver Jaskie tossed a career-best nine-inning complete game as the No. 17-ranked University of Michigan baseball team shut out the Ohio State Buckeyes, 6-0, score on Friday (May 5) at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium.
The complete-game shutout is Michigan's first since a seven-inning outing by Brett Adcock last season and the first nine-inning effort since Brandon Sinnery propelled the Wolverines to an 11-0 victory over Iowa on May 4, 2012.
Jaskie came out strong to start the contest, retiring 10 consecutive Buckeyes before surrendering a hit in the top of the fourth. From there, the lefty allowed just seven hits on the evening and walked a lone batter in the bottom of the ninth. He struck out a career-best 14 in the win to improve to 6-2 on the season.
Backed by an impressive pitching performance, the Wolverines settled in offensively. Consecutive walks gave Michigan two base runners in the bottom of the first, but the Wolverines did not score until the second inning when senior Johnny Slater bounced an RBI double off the left-field wall to score sophomore Nick Poirier and give Michigan a 1-0 lead.
After three scoreless innings, Michigan rallied with two outs in the bottom of the sixth to force a 5-0 advantage over the Buckeyes. Sophomore Jimmy Kerr got things started with a two-out walk, and Poirier followed with a double down the left-field line to give Michigan two runners in scoring position. From there, Slater ripped a triple to right field to clear the bases and push Michigan up by three. With Slater still on third, senior Harrison Wenson extended the Wolverine lead to five with his eighth homer of the season -- a two-run blast over the left-center field wall.
Following a scoreless seventh, the Maize and Blue added another run in the bottom of the eighth. Slater jumpstarted the inning with a one-out single through the right side, and junior Jake Bivens stepped to the plate one out later to rope an RBI double to right-center field.
Armed with a 6-0 lead, Jaskie came out to toe the rubber in the top of the ninth for the first time in his career as a starting pitcher. Using two singles and Jaskie's only walk of the game, the Buckeyes loaded the bases, before a groundout to third base ended the game.
Overall, six Wolverines recorded hits in the nine-hit win over the Buckeyes. With a single, a double and a triple, Slater was just a home run shy of hitting for the cycle. He led Michigan with three RBI in the effort.
