ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 22-ranked University of Michigan baseball team held Penn State to just three hits in a 14-1 win on Sunday (April 2) to complete a three-game conference sweep at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium. The win is Michigan's sixth straight overall and fourth straight in Big Ten play.
Through the weekend, Michigan finished the series sweep with 39 total runs and held the Nittany Lions to just nine. Additionally, Michigan held Penn State to just 18 hits over three games while totaling 38 as a team.
Penn State got on the board first, scoring a run in the top of the first inning. Michigan responded in a big way, however, scoring five runs in the bottom half of the first to take a commanding lead. Sophomore Ako Thomas led off the day with a free base on a hit-by-pitch and took second on a failed pickoff attempt by Penn State. A flyout then allowed Thomas to take third, and he scored the first run for the Wolverines on a wild pitch. With no men on, senior Michael Brdar kept the inning going with a single up the middle and scored on a double down the right-field line by junior Drew Lugbauer. Michigan extended its lead to 3-1 when junior/sophomore Miles Lewis roped a double to right field to score Lugbauer, and back-to-back singles from sophomores Nick Poirier and Jonathan Engelmann ended the scoring in the first inning with a four-run lead.
Michigan added a run in the third inning when Poirier scored on a sac fly from senior Harrison Wenson. The Wolverines made the score 6-1 in the fourth inning after senior Johnny Slater scored on a sac fly to left field from Lewis.
Despite leading 7-1, the Wolverines rallied for six runs in the fifth inning to go ahead 13-1. Thomas drove in Poirier on an infield single, before Slater was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to score Engelmann. With the bases loaded and one away, Lugbauer sent a drive to center field, and a Penn State fielding error allowed Brdar, Slater and Thomas to score. Lugbauer then scored on a wild pitch, extending Michigan's lead to 12.
Junior Michael Hendrickson tossed six complete innings en route to the victory and set a new career high with eight strikeouts. The lefty allowed just three hits and walked one in the effort.
The Wolverines added their final run of the game in the sixth inning when Poirier scored on a sac fly from redshirt freshman Joe Pace. Armed with the 14-1 lead, sophomore Jack Bredeson, freshman Jack Weisenburger and redshirt sophomore Grant Reuss came out of Michigan's bullpen and combined for three scoreless innings, giving up no hits.
Overall, the Wolverines tallied 13 hits on the day, with Poirier and Engelmann each recording three hits. Thomas also extended his reached-base streak to 28 straight games, while Brdar extended his hit streak to 14. The 13-run win ties Michigan's largest margin of victory, which was set in Saturday's (April 1) 15-2 win over Penn State.
