ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- With the game tied 1-1 through five complete, the No. 13-ranked University of Michigan baseball team rallied for five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to defeat Oklahoma by a 6-2 score and execute the weekend sweep on Saturday (April 14) at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium.
The sweep is Michigan's third of the season and brings the Wolverines' home record to 16-2 on the year. The victory also marks Michigan's fourth straight.
Oklahoma took to the scoreboard first, plating a run in the top of the second on two bloop singles. Michigan answered back in the bottom of the second, however, to tie the score at 1-1. Sophomore Jonathan Engelmann led off the inning with a base hit to left-center field, and senior Harrison Wenson followed with a walk. An infield single from sophomore Ako Thomas then loaded the bases, and senior Johnny Slater came up with the clutch RBI sac fly to score Engelmann and tie the game.
The score remained tied through the next two innings, but a five-run effort in the bottom of the sixth sealed the game for Michigan. Slater led off the at-bat with a double off the left-field wall, and senior Michael Brdar put runners on the corners with a base hit to short center-field. From there, a one-out intentional walk to sophomore Miles Lewis loaded the bases, and Michigan took a 2-1 lead as junior Jake Bivens was hit by pitch. With the bases still loaded, sophomore Nick Poirier drew a full-count walk to put the Wolverines up 4-1, and Engelmann continued the scoring rally with a two-RBI single down the right-field line. With runners on the corners once again, Wenson finished the scoring with a sac fly to left field that allowed Poirier to race home for a 6-1 lead.
The Sooners got a run back in the top of the next inning on a single and a double, but Michigan held Oklahoma scoreless through the next two frames to pick up the 6-2 win and execute the series sweep.
With six innings pitched, junior starter Alec Rennard earned the win on the afternoon to improve to 5-1 on the season. The righty surrendered just one run on two hits and struck out five in the effort.
Junior Jayce Vancena senior Mac Lozer combined to close out the top of the seventh for the Wolverines on the mound and allowed just one run on two hits. Sophomore reliever William Tribucher followed with a scoreless eighth, and senior Jackson Lamb slammed the door with a 1-2-3 ninth inning to end the game.
Overall, Michigan pitchers combined to allow just five hits on the day and walked just three with eight strikeouts.
At the plate, the Wolverines totaled nine hits, with one for extra bases. Slater, Brdar and Engelmann all recorded multi-hit games, while Engelmann led Michigan with two RBI. With a single in the bottom of the third, Thomas extended his reached-base streak to 36 games.
