ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- A two-run inning was not enough on Friday (March 24), as the No. 18-ranked University of Michigan baseball team dropped its Big Ten Conference opener at the University of Maryland by a 7-2 score inside Turtle Smith Stadium.
Maryland got on the board quickly, using a solo homer in the bottom of the first for a 1-0 lead. The Terps then added four more runs in the second inning, taking advantage of a single, a triple and a three-run home run to go up, 5-0.
The Wolverines responded in the top of the third, plating two runs to cut the deficit to three. Sophomore Ako Thomas got things going with a two-out single up the middle, and a walk to junior Jake Bivens put two men on. It was senior Michael Brdar who came up with the clutch hit, sending a first-pitch double down the left-field line to clear the bases.
Despite the early offense, neither team scored again until the bottom of the eighth, when Maryland added two runs on a single, two walks and a Michigan error to take home the 7-2 victory.
The loss snaps a three-game win streak and marks the first time since 2015 that the Wolverines have lost the first conference game of the season.
Sophomores Miles Lewis was the only Wolverine to record a multi-hit outing in the contest. Bivens was the only other player to reach base more than once, walking twice.
Junior lefty Oliver Jaskie was credited with his first loss of the season in the effort, despite tossing 6.1 innings and allowing just five hits with 10 strikeouts. The strikeout mark is just one short of his career high.
Senior Mac Lozer and sophomore William Tribucher also appeared for Michigan on the mound. The pair allowed just one hit and combined for one strikeout.
The No. 18-ranked Wolverines will return to play on Saturday (March 25) for the second game of the three-game series with Maryland. First pitch is set for 7 p.m. in College Park, and fans can watch the game live on the Big Ten Network.
