PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- A walkoff RBI single from sophomore Miles Lewis pushed the University of Michigan baseball team past Seton Hall in extra innings on Saturday (Feb. 18) in the first game of the doubleheader, propelling the Wolverines to an 8-7, 10-inning win and their first victory of the 2017 season.
The second game of Saturday's doubleheader was halted after five innings due to darkness with Michigan leading, 10-7. The game, scheduled for seven innings, will be resumed Sunday morning (Feb. 19) at 10 a.m. before the series finale.
Lewis led the Wolverines with four hits in the opener, while sophomore Jonathan Engelmann and senior Harrison Wenson each went 3-4 in the contest. Engelmann led the charge for Michigan with three RBI, while Wenson scored four runs and sophomore Nick Poirier scored two.
Neither team scored in the first inning, but the Pirates jumped on the board first in the top of the second, plating two runs on four hits for an early lead.
Michigan answered in the bottom of the inning, however, when Wenson led off the inning by reaching on an error and scored on an RBI single from Engelmann. The Pirates rallied for two more runs in the top of the third inning to go up 4-1.
Runs batted in from Engelmann and sophomore Ako Thomas put Michigan within one run in the bottom of the fourth inning, but Seton Hall took a two-run lead with a solo run scored in the top of the fifth.
A three-run fifth inning was a difference-maker in the game for Michigan, as the Wolverines took their first lead of the game, 6-5. Lewis led off the rally with a single to rightfield, and one out later he scored from second on an RBI single from Wenson. After a walk to Poirier put two men on base, Engelmann again came up clutch with an RBI double down the leftfield line that cleared the bases and put the Wolverines up by one.
Seton Hall capitalized on two walks and an RBI single in the top of the seventh inning to tie the score at 6-6, but Michigan again went ahead in the bottom of the same inning on an RBI single from senior Johnny Slater.
The Pirates tied the game in the top of the eighth on an unearned run, and a scoreless ninth forced the game into extras.
After staving off the Pirates in the top of the 10th, Engelmann led off things for Michigan in the bottom of the inning with a walk and advanced to second on a Slater hit-by-pitch. Thomas was then plunked as well, loading the bases with no outs, and Lewis sent a first-pitch single down the rightfield line for the walkoff victory.
RHP Bryan Pall tossed the ninth and 10th innings, facing just six batters and allowing no one to reach base. He was credited with the victory.
The Wolverines pitching staff surrendered nine Seton Hall hits in the victory and walked just three batters. Junior righty starter Alec Rennard made his Michigan debut in the outing, tossing three complete innings with two strikeouts.
