ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Senior forward Nicky Waldeck completed her second career hat trick in the 104th minute to help the University of Michigan women's soccer team upset No. 19 Rutgers, 3-2, in double overtime on Thursday (Sept. 29) at U-M Soccer Stadium. The win improved the Wolverines' Big Ten record to a perfect 4-0 and gave U-M a perfect 2-0 record against ranked opponents this season (No. 12 Notre Dame; W, 2-0; Aug. 25).

Michigan has won each of its last six games, which marks the most consecutive wins by a Maize and Blue team since the 2013 squad won a program-record eight in a row (Oct. 3-Nov. 2).
Junior/sophomore goalkeeper Sarah Jackson complemented Waldeck's efforts on the other end of the field, making a career-high 10 saves to secure her seventh win of the season (7-1-0).
With the game tied 2-2 heading into the second sudden-victory overtime period, the Wolverines had been outshot, 25-10. Waldeck made her chance count at the right time, heading home the game-winning goal in the 104th minute on a cross from sophomore Abby Kastroll. It marked Waldeck's fifth goal of the season and second career hat trick (vs. Nebraska, Oct. 2, 2014).
For the 10th time in as many games, Michigan got on board first, as Waldeck's first goal of the night came in the 10th minute. Senior captain Jessica Heifetz played a ball to the top of the box, and the ball was batted around until it fell to the feet of Waldeck, and she tucked the ball inside the right post. It marked Rutgers' first goal conceded in Big Ten play.
Michigan's defense held the Scarlet Knights scoreless up until the 26th minute, when Madison Tiernan fired a long shot from the top of the box past Jackson.
The game was knotted 1-1 at the half and remained tied until the 73rd minute, when Rutgers took the lead with a goal from Amanda Visco. It marked the first time U-M had trailed in a game since Aug. 28 at Marquette (L, 2-1).
In the 79th minute, Waldeck scored her second goal of the night, slipping into the top of the six to take advantage of a failed clear by Rutgers. Waldeck's goal helped even the playing field once again and eventually send the game to overtime, where her heroics gave U-M the 3-2 victory.
Overall, Rutgers outshot Michigan, 25-12, on the night, led by Tiernan's game-high 12 shots.
In just the third meeting between the two teams, all of which have come since Rutgers joined the Big Ten in 2014, the U-M win evened the all-time series at 1-1-1.
The Wolverines will remain in Ann Arbor to host Maryland on Sunday (Oct. 2). Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. at U-M Soccer Stadium. This is the second game of a doubleheader with the men's soccer team, which plays Penn State at noon. Tickets for that game are available by visiting the women's soccer ticket page, and tickets from the men's game are also good at the women's match. In addition, all fans with tickets from the Michigan vs. Wisconsin football game can redeem their ticket stub at the Michigan soccer ticket office to receive free admission, while supplies last.
