ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team defeated Maryland, 3-1, on Sunday (Oct. 2) at U-M Soccer Stadium to remain unbeaten in conference play at 5-0-0, which is the best Big Ten start in program history.
U-M's seven consecutive wins, dating back to Sept. 2, are one shy of the program record of eight straight wins set by the 2013 squad (Oct. 3-Nov. 2).
The Wolverines pressured early, recording three corner kicks and three shots in the early going before they broke through in the 23rd minute. Senior Nicky Waldeck turned her defender near the top of the 18, took a few touches and played a through ball across to sophomore Jackie White, who pushed it past Maryland goalkeeper Rachel Egyed into the bottom left corner. The Wolverines have now scored first in all 11 games this season.
Minutes before the end of the first half, sophomore Reilly Martin split two Maryland defenders on the right flank and carried the ball to the top right corner of the six before laying it off to junior Emma Groffsky, who registered U-M's second goal at 42:35. The Wolverines outshot the Terrapins, 11-2, in the first half and took a 2-0 lead into the locker room.
Martin got Michigan going again early in the second half, scoring Michigan's third goal of the day in the 50th minute, marking the fourth time this season the Wolverines have scored three or more goals. Martin was tripped up by a Maryland defender just outside the six-yard box while attacking the net, but without missing a beat, the sophomore forward got back up and punched the loose ball in the back of the net for an unassisted goal.
In the 76th minute, junior goalkeeper Megan Hinz came on to replace junior/sophomore Sarah Jackson in goal. Jackson was forced to make just one save in 75-plus minutes of action.
Michigan held the Terrapins scoreless through 78 minutes until Maryland's Chelsea Jackson got her head on the other end of a Marisa Knott corner kick to spoil the clean sheet for U-M at 78:11.
Michigan registered its highest shot count of the season, outshooting the Terps, 26-4, and also held a 10-4 advantage in corner kicks.
The Wolverines are midway through their Big Ten schedule, having played five of 11 games, and will now hit the road for a pair of Big Ten road matchups next week. Michigan will play at Illinois on Thursday (Oct. 6) at 7 p.m. CDT before traveling to Evanston, Illinois, to take on Northwestern on Sunday, Oct. 9, at 1 p.m. CDT.
