ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Despite rallying for three runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to force extra innings, the University of Michigan baseball team dropped a 6-5 contest to the visiting Oakland Golden Grizzlies on Tuesday night (May 17) at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium. The loss came during the Wolverines' final home game of the 2016 season, pushing their home record to 16-4 this year.
The Wolverines fell behind early as the Oakland Grizzlies hit a two-run home run in the top of the first, but the score remained 2-0 until Michigan came alive in the fifth inning. Freshman Ako Thomas led off with a one-out walk, and sophomore Jake Bivens picked up an outfield single to give Michigan two-base runners. An RBI single up the middle from senior Cody Bruder then put Michigan on the board for the first time, and the following RBI single from junior Carmen Benedetti scored Bivens to tie things up at 2-2.
The Golden Grizzlies answered back in the top of the sixth inning, plating two runs on two hits, a balk and a Michigan error to force a 4-2 lead. After a scoreless seventh, Oakland then added another in the eighth on a leadoff double and an RBI single, going up by three.
Trailing 5-2 in the bottom of the ninth, senior Dominic Jamett led off with a free base on a hit-by-pitch and an Oakland error allowed junior Michael Brdar to reach base safely, giving the Wolverines two men on with no outs. Thomas then battled in an eight-pitch at-bat for a walk, loading the bases. It was then Bruder who came up clutch again, doubling down the left-field line and clearing the bases to tie the score at 5-5, before a double play ended the inning.
Despite the rally, Oakland scored an unanswered run in the top of the 10th, taking home a 6-5 win for Michigan's fifth straight loss heading into the final series of the regular season. Six Michigan pitchers appeared in the contest, as the staff combined for 15 strikeouts and just two walks through 10 innings
Bruder led the Michigan offense on the day, tallying four of Michigan's five RBI and going 4-for-five at the plate. Bivens also recorded a multi-hit outing with two hits and a sacrifice bunt, and Thomas led the Wolverines with two runs scored.
The Wolverines will return to action with the final series of the 2016 regular season this weekend in Champaign, Illinois, against the Illinois Fighting Illini. First pitch for the series opener is set for 6 p.m. CDT on Thursday (May 19).
