LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Senior/junior Matt Ogden struck out a career-high seven in 6.2 innings of work, and fifth-year senior Kendall Patrick had a pair of two-run home runs as the University of Michigan baseball team opened NCAA Tournament play with a 10-5 win over Bradley Friday afternoon (May 29) in the Louisville Regional at Jim Patterson Stadium.
Michigan will now play on Saturday afternoon (May 30) against No. 3 seed Louisville. Saturday's game will start at 4 p.m. and be streamed on ESPN3.
Bradley put up a run in the bottom of the first as Isaac Smith singled, moved to second on a wild pitch and to third on a single by Spencer Gaa that was lost in the sun and scored on Paul Solka's sacrifice fly to center. Michigan quickly answered in the top of the second. Sophomore Carmen Benedetti led off with a double to left. Junior Cody Bruder followed with an infield single. A sacrifice bunt moved both runners up 90 feet, and senior Kevin White drove in a run with a single to right. Sophomore Johnny Slater's sacrifice fly gave Michigan a 2-1 lead, and Patrick homered to left field to give the Maize and Blue a 4-1 advantage.
Michigan put up two more runs in the fourth. Slater singled, stole second and scored on Patrick's double to right. Patrick moved to third as junior Jacob Cronenworth singled up the middle and scored on freshman Jake Bivens' sacrifice fly to left. The Maize and Blue tacked on single runs in the fifth and sixth innings. Cronenworth was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the fifth. Junior Travis Maezes then belted a double to the gap in right, bringing in Bruder for an 8-1 lead.
Patrick came back and belted his second two-run home run of the game in the top of the ninth. Bradley made things interesting in the ninth, scoring four runs, three on a home run from Drew Carlile, but a foul out ended the game as Wolverines moved on in the Louisville Regional winner's bracket.
Ogden set career highs in both innings pitched and strikeouts. He allowed five hits and a run while walking two to move to 5-1 on the season. Patrick set a career high with five runs batted in, going 3-for-4 at the plate with three runs scored. Slater also had three hits, while Cronenworth, Benedetti and Bruder had two hits apiece.
