SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Despite a standout effort from sophomore Jess Angerman that featured a program record five assists and one goal, the University of Michigan women's lacrosse team fell to No. 13 Notre Dame, 21-12, in its non-conference finale on Sunday (April 12) at Arlotta Stadium. Sophomore Madeline Dion notched her second career hat trick and added two caused turnovers for the Maize and Blue.
The Fighting Irish scored three of the first four goals in the contest, as they sandwiched Michigan's first goal with two free-position goals and then added an assisted goal at 19:54 to go up 3-1. U-M's first goal of the day came at 21:36, as Angerman fed Dion from behind the cage as Dion cut diagonal through the eight meter.
The Wolverines stopped Notre Dame's quick two-goal run, as Angerman connected with Dion again for her second goal of the half at 18:44, to bring U-M within one, 3-2.
The remainder of the first half featured alternating two-goal runs -- two from Notre Dame and one from Michigan. Notre Dame scored a pair of consecutive goals to push its lead to 5-2 by the 17:17 mark, but U-M sophomores Lauren Oberlander and Tess Korten netted unassisted goals to cut ND's lead back to one, 5-4, with 6:15 left in the opening stanza. The Irish ended the half with two unanswered goals to take a 7-4 advantage into the break.
Notre Dame's Heidi Annaheim, who tallied its final goal of the first half, scored 1:09 into the second half to put the Irish up 8-4.
The two teams traded goals, including two free-position goals for Michigan and one for Notre Dame, and then Oberlander's goal on an Angerman assist at 12:39 made the score 10-7 Irish.
The Fighting Irish responded with four unanswered goals throughout a 2:57 span that gave them a 14-7 lead with 17:20 remaining in the game. The Wolverines continued to claw back, scoring four of the next six goals, all from different players -- Dion, Anna Schueler, Kelly Schlansker, and Angerman to remain within five goals, 15-10, at the 10:02 mark.
Notre Dame's Stephanie Toy and Korten swapped goals to maintain the five-goal gap, 17-12, as Angerman recorded her fifth assist of the day on Korten' man-up goal at 6:02.
The Irish then erupted on another four-goal run to close the game and secure the 21-12 victory.
On the draw circle, sophomore's Kim Coughlan and Margaret Metzger recorded career highs in draw controls with five and four, respectively, while Coughlan also added a free-position goal.

QUOTES
Michigan Head Coach Jennifer Ulehla
On the team's improvement over the last two games against ranked opponents ... "We want to keep getting better and build confidence against these top-ranked teams. We were able to do that for half of a game against Penn State and I believe we were in this game for more like 65-70 percent, so we're making progress. These student-athletes are learning that they can compete with these programs, but more importantly, they area also learning what it takes to end up staying with these teams and competing for 60 minutes."
On Jess Angerman setting a program record with five assists ... "Jess played very unselfishly today. She has great vision and she was able to find the open player. We used her a lot as an outlet when we were being doubled up top. She received the outlet pass and then looked inside and made great feeds. From a standpoint of buying into our system and working off of what the opponent is doing, when they're sending double teams to some of our best players, she's really bought into it and was a huge factor in today's game."
On other players that have stepped up and owned their roles ... "Kim (Coughlan) has been instrumental in our defense. We have taken her out of the midfield and focused her more on the defense, and her presence back there has been critical. She's explosive and she has good stick work, so what I've asked her to really work on is the clear. She was a big part of getting the ball down the field successfully today. And then on the draw, Kim has the height and the athleticism. Madeline Dion continues to get better and better. She's becoming more composed, we're still working on that, but she's become more aggressive and plays with a tremendous amount of heart. Margaret Metzger is important to us on the draw circle and is a vocal and physical leader on the defensive end. Those individuals have taken control in games that are tough for 60 minutes, and that's what we need -- they are really starting to shine."
On Notre Dame going 8-for-11 on free-position attempts ... "We play an aggressive style defense and as the game goes on we have to continue to remain focused and work as a unit -- some of those crucial fouls were in the second half. We have to remain mentally and physically focused within this defense and make sure we're not fouling them and putting them on the eight meter."
U-M Sophomore Attacker Jess Angerman
On the team's growth in the last two games against ranked opponents ... "I'm really proud of the way we've come out against these top-20 teams. We've showed a lot of intensity and started to click as a unit. We've really been working as a team, which is something we've been struggling with on and off this season. Going into the rest of Big Ten play, coming out strong against our opponents is going to be really crucial."
On setting a program record with five assists ... "Yesterday Alyssa (Murray) told us that what was going to be open was, once they send the double, get it behind and looking across the middle. Madeline Dion and Lauren Oberlander area both really great at cutting through the middle and getting their defenders on their back. When they key on one player -- today they were keying on Anna Schueler -- Anna was able to get it to me and I was able to feed it across. It's all about listening to what the coaches have to say and utilizing it."
