ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan baseball team picked up its fifth home win in six tries as a three-run fourth inning paced the Wolverines to a 5-3 win over Central Michigan Wednesday afternoon (April 1) at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium.
The Wolverine bat came to life in the fourth inning. Senior Jackson Glines walked and moved to third on sophomore Carmen Benedetti's single to center. A sacrifice bunt moved runners up to second and third, and junior Travis Maezes, playing in his first game since March 13, singled to right to bring in a pair of runs. Freshman Drew Lugbauer drove in Michigan's third run of the inning as his single to right brought home Maezes.
Junior Jacob Cronenworth led off the fifth with a solo home run down the right-field line. It was his third home run in the last four games and gave Michigan a 4-0 lead. The Maize and Blue used a double steal in the seventh with freshman Jake Bivens stealing home and giving U-M a 5-0 advantage.
Central plated a pair of runs in the eighth and got a one-out triple from Zach McKinstry in the ninth. He scored, but freshman Bryan Pall got a groundout on that run and ended the game with a flyout, picking up his second save of the season.
Lugbauer had three hits to lead the Wolverine offense. Maezes drove in a pair of runs and walked three times, while Glines reached base on a free pass twice.
Michigan used six pitchers on the day, and freshman Oliver Jaskie earned the win, allowing two hits and striking out a batter in 2.2 scoreless innings. Classmate Jayce Vancena was the starter, and he did not allow a hit in three innings of work. Benedetti struck out a pair in an inning of relief.
The Wolverines visit Bloomington, Indiana, to face Indiana in a three-game Big Ten series starting Friday night (April 3) at 6:05 p.m. at Bart Kaufman Field. Rain is in the forecast for Friday in Bloomington. Check MGoBlue.com for any schedule adjustments or cancellations.
