LONG BEACH, Calif. -- The University of Michigan baseball team yielded runs in each of the first three innings in a 7-2 loss at Long Beach State on Saturday afternoon (Feb. 14) at Blair Field.
The Wolverines had two more doubles on the day, this time off the bats of sophomores Johnny Slater and Carmen Benedetti. Slater's two-bagger drove in a run, while junior Cody Bruder also had a run batted in. On the mound, freshmen Michael Hendrickson and Bryan Pall combined to pitch 5.2 innings of relief, striking out five and allowing a pair of runs.
Long Beach State put up a pair of runs in the bottom of the first. A double a sacrifice bunt put a Dirtbag at third. With the infield in, Garrett Hampson hit a hot shot to short and reached on a fielder's choice, scoring Jared James. Hampson went to third on Nolan Meadow's double and scored on a sacrifice fly from Zach Rivera.
The Maize and Blue scored its first run in the top of the third. Sophomore Harrison Wenson was hit by a 3-2 pitch to start the inning. After a strikeout, junior Jacob Cronenworth moved him to second on a groundout to first. Bruder brought in Wenson on a single to left field for his first RBI as a Wolverine. Long Beach answered, scoring a pair of runs on a throwing error on a fielder's choice at home plate, making it 5-1 Dirtbags. Long Beach added insurance in the sixth as James singled, went to third on a failed pickoff and scored on Hampson's bloop single.
Michigan plated a run in the seventh as senior Jackson Glines walked and scored on Slater's double to the wall in right field. Long Beach tallied a run in the eighth to end the scoring as U-M had just four hits on the day.
The loss was tagged to sophomore Keith Lehmann, who allowed three runs and three hits in 1.2 innings. Tanner Brown struck out eight in six innings to pick up the win for the Dirtbags, while James and Rivera had two hits apiece.
The Wolverines and Dirtbags conclude the three-game series on Sunday (Feb. 15) at 1 p.m. PST.
