ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan baseball program and head coach Erik Bakich recently announced the recruiting class for the 2015-16 academic year. The Maize and Blue has 13 incoming student-athletes, including ten freshmen and three upperclassmen. [ Full Release ]
The final four students from the class to be recognized will be freshman Jonathan Engelmann (San Mateo, Calif./Burlingame), sophomore Matt Ross (Los Gatos, Calif./Bellarmine), junior Michael Brdar (Pleasanton, Calif./Diablo Valley College) and senior Matt Ramsay (Hudson, Ohio/Wofford College).
Jonathan Engelmann - OF - San Mateo, Calif. / Burlingame
Four year letterwinner at Burlingame High School in Burlingame, Calif. ... Named to the Perfect Game Preseason Top 50 as a sophomore ... Was named the Pacific Athletic League MVP as a junior and senior ... Won the Pacific Athletic League Batting Title during his junior and senior seasons ... Was named to the All-State first team as a senior ... Named to the Oakland Athletics Area Code Team during his senior season ... Received Under Armour All-American honors as a senior ... Was also named a Perfect Game Underclassman All-American as a sophomore and a Perfect Game Upperclassman as a junior and senior ... Drafted by the Minnesota Twins in the 28th Round of the 2015 MLB Draft at the close of his senior season ... Also competed with the NorCal Baseball summer league and the Chandler World summer ball teams.
Matt Ross - IF - Los Gatos, Calif. / Bellarmine College Prep
Two-year varsity letterwinner at Bellarmine College Prep in San Jose, Calif. ... Helped guide his team to the West Catholic League Tournament Championship title as a junior ... Played second base, third base and shortstop during his high school tenure ... Was also a member of the basketball team as a freshman ... Played with The Show summer league team as well as the Trosky Baseball summer ball squad ... Was an eight-time Principal's Scholar ... Was also an AP Scholar ... Received an invitation to the Honor Society ... Is currently enrolled in the College of Engineering at the University of Michigan.
Michael Brdar - IF - Pleasanton, Calif. / Diablo Valley College
Was a member of the De La Salle High School baseball team in Concord, Calif., until his graduation in 2012 ... Helped guide his team to a North Coast Section Championship title as a senior ... Finished his senior season with a .348 batting average ... Won the team's Gold Glove Award as a senior ... Began his college career at Diablo Valley College in Pleasant Hill, Calif. ... Led the Diablo Valley Vikings to the best fielding percentage in the state from his position as a freshman shortstop ... Did not compete in 2014 due to a medical redshirt ... Finished his sophomore year with Diablo Valley College in 2015 as a captain ... Played every game in the middle infield ... Led the Big 8 Conference in double for his sophomore season ... Also competed with the California Smoke and Walnut Creek Crawdads summer league teams ... Was a North Coast Section Scholar Athlete during high school ... Was named to the Academic All-State team and a member of Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society at Diablo Valley.
Matt Ramsay - OF - Hudson, Ohio / Wofford College
Competed at Hudson Valley High School in Hudson, Ohio, before graduating in 2011 ... Was a three-year letterwinner on the varsity baseball team ... Named to All-Conference First Team as a junior ... Was named an All-Conference honoree and played in the Northeast Ohio High School Coaches Association All-Star Game at Progressive Field as a senior .... Was an Under Armour preseason All-American during the 2010 and 2011 seasons ... Named to the Academic Honor Roll as a senior ... Began his collegiate baseball career at Wofford College in Spartanburg, S.C. ... Named to the Southern Conference Academic Honor Roll and Southern Conference Spring All-Academic Team during his freshman and sophomore seasons at Wofford College ... Led his team with a .359 average during his final season with the Wofford Terriers... Named to the All-Southern Conference second team and the Southern Conference All-Tournament team as a junior ... Was also a member of the National Honor Society and a captain on the baseball and football teams during high school ... Finished the 2015 season with a Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-District and All-America Baseball first team honor.
Michigan finished the 2015 season with a Big Ten Tournament championship and a trip to the NCAA Regional Tournament, where it went 2-2 and did not advance past the regional final.
