ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Junior Nicky Waldeck netted the golden goal just 1:45 into overtime to give the University of Michigan women's soccer team a 1-0 win against Purdue on senior night on Saturday (Oct. 24) at U-M Soccer Stadium. The win moves the Wolverines into a tie for third place in the Big Ten standings with Rutgers at 6-2-2, with one game remaining in the regular season.

After 90 minutes of scoreless play, Michigan headed to overtime for second straight match. A little more than a minute into the first overtime period, Michigan gained possession of the ball near midfield. Freshman Reilly Martin carried the ball up the field and played a ball in behind Purdue defense to Waldeck, who ran onto the ball and found herself one on one with Purdue Keeper Jordan Ginther. Waldeck took a couple touches and placed the ball inside the left post to give the Wolverines the thrilling overtime victory.
The heavy rain prior to the game made the field slick, making it difficult for either team to play long balls over the top in the first half, as many picked up speed and skipped over the end line.
Michigan's best chance of the first half came in the 17th minute when junior/sophomore Ani Sarkisian played a ball forward for Waldeck to run onto near the top of the box. Waldeck found herself one on one with the keeper, but Ginther came out to make the stop.
Waldeck learned from that first one-on-one experience and made it count later in overtime.
"When I came out of the game in the first half, Dino (coach Duerst) asked me if there was anything else I could have done differently on that play," said Waldeck. "He told me that if I got that opportunity again, take it at the keeper and take an extra touch, so I was thinking that in the back of my head and tried to find a corner."
Michigan dominated possession in the first half, but stats were close with U-M leading 5-4 in shots and 2-1 in corner kicks, and it was scoreless at the half.
The Wolverines produced six shots in the second half, compared to just three by the Boilermakers, but neither team produced a goal before the end of regulation.
After Waldeck's golden goal in the 92nd minute, Michigan had held Purdue scoreless for 91:45 to secure its second straight shutout and eighth of the season. It marked the fifth shutout of the season for U-M goalkeeper Megan Hinz, who made four saves in the win. Michigan is now 1-0-2 in overtime games this season. Michigan has not allowed a goal in its last 210+ minutes of play.
Prior to the match, Michigan honor its seven seniors -- Maddie Clarfield, Cassie Collins, Lulu Haidar, Corinne Harris, Christina Murillo, Christina Ordonez and Sydney Raguse. To date, that class has compiled a 57-20-9 overall record, including a 40-4-3 mark at U-M Soccer Stadium.
"This is a great way for our seniors to go out," said head coach Greg Ryan. "We're so proud of this group. They've contributed so much to our success on the field and to our culture, and we're so happy that they could end their last regular-season game on this field with a great victory."
The Wolverines will wrap up regular-season play at Penn State on Wednesday (Oct. 28). The Nittany Lions are currently in second place in the Big Ten with a 7-2-1 record. The Michigan-Penn State match will kick off at 7 p.m. at PSU's Jeffrey Field in State College, Pennsylvania.
