ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan baseball team wrapped up its three-game homestand with a 6-2 loss to Toledo Wednesday night (April 11) at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium. The Rockets plated four runs in the top of the third and a pair in the ninth, while three Wolverines had two hits apiece.
Toledo scored the winning runs in the top of the third. The Rockets started the inning with back-to-back singles. A walk loaded the bases, before a sacrifice fly opened the scoring. A hit-by-pitch reloaded the bases and another Rocket sac fly made it 2-0. Back-to-back Toledo singles finished off the scoring run to make it 4-0 for the road team.
The Wolverines answered with a run in the bottom of the third as freshman Dylan Delaney (Woodland Hills, Calif./Chaminade) led off with an infield single and went to second on a throwing error. He moved to third on a fielder's choice by senior Coley Crank (Pinole, Calif./Pinole Valley) and scored on a sacrifice fly from senior John Lorenz (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East).
The score remained the same until the bottom of the eighth. Junior/sophomore Zach Johnson (Grandville, Mich./Grandville) led off the inning with a single. He went to second on a balk and went to third on an infield single by junior Patrick Biondi (Woodhaven, Mich./Divine Child). Johnson then scored as freshman Mike Dolloff (Davison, Mich./Davison) walked with the bases loaded.
Toledo plated two runs in the top of the ninth as Mark Lapikas homered to right field.
Delaney, Biondi and junior/sophomore John DiLaura (Clinton Twp., Mich./Warren DeLa Salle) had two hits apiece for the Wolverines. Lapikas had three hits to lead the Rockets.
Junior/sophomore Logan McAnallen (DeWitt, Mich./DeWitt) struck out four in five innings of relief. Junior Ben Ballantine (Napa, Calif./Napa) earned the start for the Maize and Blue, allowing a hit with a strikeout and two walks. The loss went to fifth-year senior Kolby Wood (Buchanan, Mich./Berrien Springs) as he gave up three runs and two hits. Toledo's Alec Schmenk earned the win, allowing five hits and a run in five innings.
Michigan heads to State College, Pa., for a three-game Big Ten series at Penn State. The set starts this Friday (April 13) at 5:05 p.m. and the game can be seen on the Big Ten Network.
