ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan ice hockey team (No. 7 USCHO/No. 7 USA Today) fell short tonight (Friday, Nov. 18), dropping a 2-1 contest to the Ohio State Buckeyes (No. 14 USCHO/No. 14 USA Today) at Yost Ice Arena.
After the Wolverines had taken a first-period lead, Darik Angeli scored two unanswered goals to lead the Buckeyes to a comeback victory, extending the Wolverines' season-long winless streak to three games.
The scoring broke open late in the first period when Mac Bennett (Narragansett, R.I.) posted a one-timer past the glove of OSU netminder, Cal Heeter, off a feed from Chris Brown (Flower Mound, Texas). It was Bennett's third goal of the season and 10th point (3g, 7a) overall. Brown now has points in back-to-back games (1g, 1a).
Angeli netted his first of the evening, and fourth of the season, two minutes later to knot the game at 1-1 heading into the first intermission.
The second period saw nothing but penalties for both teams, including a five-minute major and game misconduct for checking from behind, which was assessed to OSU's Tanner Fritz. Each team enjoyed two power-play opportunities in the period but were forced to settle with the 1-1 tie after 40 minutes of play.
The Buckeyes scored the eventual game-winning goal, 7:53 into third period, thanks to an odd-angle shot from Angeli. The freshman forward threw the puck at the net from along the goal line and the shot slithered past Michigan goaltender Shawn Hunwick (Sterling Heights, Mich.) to give Ohio State the game-winner.
Hunwick turned aside 31-of-33 shots in all, while the Wolverines solved Heeter just once on 30 offerings.
Michigan and Ohio State will close out the weekend set tomorrow night (Saturday, Nov. 19) at Yost. Game time is scheduled for 7:35 p.m.
