ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Picking up where it left off on Friday, the top-ranked University of Michigan ice hockey team continued its offensive outpouring to defeat Alaska Anchorage 7-2 on Saturday evening (Oct. 10) at Yost Ice Arena.
With the win, U-M secured a second consecutive sweep and improved to 4-0 to start the season for the second year in a row.
Sophomore netminder Jack Ivankovic made 20 saves on 22 shots faced from the UAA attackers to backstop the Wolverines, inching toward 1,000 career saves.
Michigan claimed a lead at 7:22 when the nation's top scorer, Jayden Perron, posted up near the blue paint and kept his stick on the ice to bury his fifth goal of the season off a goal-line feed from Ben Robertson. Perron's high-profile running mate, Michael Hage, picked up the secondary helper on the opening goal.
Drew Schock continued his torrid offensive start on the back end by clapping home a one-timer from the right circle at 8:44 following a crafty backhand pass from Garrett Schifsky below the goal line. The captain had drawn defenders toward him to free up space in the slot; Schock's fellow defenseman, Dakoda Rhéaume-Mullen, nabbed the secondary assist.
Alaska Anchorage (0-4-0) responded roughly a minute later with a goal of its own to halve the deficit at 9:51.
Sophomore Cole McKinney notched a power-play tally from the slot at 18:45 to make it 3-1 as the period began to wind down. Classmate Malcolm Spence popped a perfect pass onto his tape to set up the tic-tac-toe passing play after Cam Reid had worked the puck down to Spence below the goal line to initiate the sequence.
Tempers flared as the buzzer rang to end the first period, but Michigan carried a 3-1 lead to the locker room along with a sizable 16-5 advantage in shots on goal. U-M also reasserted itself at the faceoff dot after faltering in the third period of Friday's contest to lead by a 15-9 margin.
Spence potted his second goal of the season from the high slot off a feed from Nick Moldenhauer to bump the lead to 4-1 at 5:21 of the second period.
Three minutes later, Perron doubled up from the left circle to increase the lead to 5-1. Linemates Hage and Will Horcoff turned a standard zone entry into a display of synergy as the three-man unit weaved effortlessly through the opposition before Perron settled into space on the flank to deposit a one-timer.
UAA leveraged traffic in front of Ivankovic's crease, taking away the sophomore's eyes to sneak a long-range shot through a cluster of bodies and find the back of the net to make it 5-2 at 14:02.
Hage set up the sixth goal at 17:26 when, with his back to the net, the centerman collected a pass above the hash marks before quickly dishing a blind pass between his legs that found Horcoff's tape as he broke in on net. The big forward made no mistake and tallied his second of the weekend. Perron earned the other assist, his third point of the night, for moving the puck to Hage to set up his highlight-reel feed.
Each team repeated its first-period output, so the teams headed to their respective dressing rooms with Michigan ahead by four goals. Shots on goal were 38-16 in Michigan's favor, and the Wolverines used a 17-2 second-period performance at the faceoff dot to pull ahead 32-11 in that category.
With U-M on a power play, Perron secured his hat trick by tallying a third goal at 3:16 to extend the lead to 7-2 with a blast from a low angle below the left circle following another precision feed from Hage. Freshman Landon DuPont recorded the secondary assist on Perron's seventh of the year.
With yet another primary assist, Hage secured the first four-helper game for a Wolverine since he last did it against Notre Dame in March's Big Ten Tournament quarterfinal. He now sits on the doorstep of Michigan's vaunted Century Club, as he will enter play next weekend with 98 career points.
Michigan put a bow on the weekend series with a pair of wins after pouring 17 goals into the net over the course of the two-game affair. The Wolverines ended Saturday's finale on the right side of a 48-22 disparity in shots on goal and a 38-17 gulf in the faceoff dot.
Next week, Michigan heads west for its highest-profile non-conference series of the season when the Wolverines will face off against the defending champion Denver inside its rink on Friday and Saturday (Oct. 16-17). The games will be streamed live on NCHC.tv, with puck drop set for 7 p.m. MT on Friday before the series wraps up at 6 p.m. MT on Saturday.
