BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -- Jayden Perron opened and closed the scoring for the University of Michigan ice hockey team as the Wolverines came back from an early deficit to defeat Bowling Green 4-3 on Saturday night (Oct. 3) at Slater Family Ice Arena.
Perron also collected a pair of assists for a four-point night -- the first of his career. The victory also was the 100th for head coach Brandon Naurato.
Not to be outdone, Michael Hage added a goal and three assists for a four-point performance of his own. The duo was joined atop the stat sheet by blue liner Drew Schock, who registered a goal and an assist to help drive the offense.
With the non-conference home-and-home series shifting to Ohio after a decisive Michigan win to open the season on Friday at Yost, the Falcons this time bolted out to a hot start.
Bowling Green (0-2-0) turned an early wave of energy into a lead just 1:01 into the contest when a long-range shot ricocheted off the glass behind the net and bounced in off the Jack Ivankovic's back. BGSU doubled down three minutes later to notch a more conventional goal and expanded its lead to 2-0 after U-M turned the puck over to hand a breakaway opportunity to the home team.
The Falcons carried a two-goal lead and a 23-7 advantage in shots on goal into the locker room.
Michigan (2-0-0) responded immediately when play resumed for the second period, and it took just 13 seconds for the Wolverines to score and turn the tide. Looking for a spark coming out of the locker room, it was senior forward Perron who scored for the second straight night to make it a 2-1 game off assists from Will Horcoff and Hage.
The Wolverines leveled the score at 7:31 when Hage flipped a backhand shot into the net after Drew Schock created a rebound by skating toward the middle of the ice and releasing a low shot from the point that was blockered aside for Hage to capitalize upon while the goalie was scrambling to get back into position. Perron notched the secondary assist.
Moments later, Schock launched a seeing-eye shot through traffic to earn Michigan's first lead of the night at 3-2 with 9:10 left in the middle period. Hage returned the favor by assisting on Schock's marker along with Perron, who registered his second straight second assist.
U-M used a stronger second-period effort to flip the game and surged ahead 3-2 with 20 minutes remaining. Shots on goal stood at 36-20 in BGSU's favor while Michigan's centermen had the Wolverines leading in the faceoff dot 23-18.
Bowling Green embarked on a power play at 9:42 of the third period in search of a game-tying goal, and they found it with 25 seconds left in the opportunity to level the score at three at 11:16.
Once again, Michigan responded immediately to pull ahead 4-3 at 12:10 when Hage made a slick move to create space below the dot as he maneuvered toward the blue paint. When he finally slid a pass toward the top of the crease, Perron was there to slam his feed home. Sophomore defenseman Asher Barnett earned the secondary helper.
A late Wolverines penalty raised the suspense level with time winding down and the Falcons' net empty, but the visitors hung on to notch a win and secure the series sweep. BGSU ended the evening with a 41-30 lead in shots on goal and the game's lone power-play tally, but U-M locked up the one-goal win and used a dominant third-period effort to close the night with a 39-26 advantage in the faceoff dot.
Sophomore netminder Ivankovic turned in one of his strongest collegiate performances, finishing the night with 38 saves on 41 shots faced to help the team stay undefeated through the opening weekend.
Next weekend, Michigan will welcome the Alaska Anchorage Seawolves to Ann Arbor for a pair of non-conference games at Yost Ice Arena on Friday and Saturday (Oct. 9-10). Puck drop for both contests is set for 7 p.m., and each will be streamed live on B1G+.
