ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan ice hockey team (No. 7 USCHO/No. 7 USA Today) narrowly dropped the second game in the weekend series against Ohio State (No. 14 USCHO/No. 14 USA Today) with a final score of 6-5 Saturday night (Nov. 19). After rallying from a two-goal deficit in the beginning of the third period, Michigan came up short as a result of OSU's numerous power-play opportunities, as the Buckeyes converted on 3-of-7 man-advantage chances.
Alex Guptill (New Market, Ontario) had two points tonight (2g), Mike Chiasson (Henderson, Nev.) registered three (1g, 2a), and Lee Moffie (Wallingford, Conn.) tallied three assists. Chris Brown (Flower Mound, Texas) and Travis Lynch (White Lake, Mich.) each tallied two assists in the series.
Chiasson registered his first marker of the match-up when he netted a power-play goal through multiple OSU defensemen and straight into the top left corner of the net after a goalline feed from Brown. A.J. Treais (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) picked up the other assist.
A little over four minutes later at 6:25, a scrum in front of the Michigan crease resulted in a Buckeye goal by Alex Lippincott. Chris Crane went on to score OSU's second goal at 9:04 after a wrist shot sent the puck into contact with the tip of Shawn Hunwick's (Sterling Heights, Mich.) glove but managed to find its way into the back of the net, bringing the score to 2-1 in favor of Ohio State.
Early on in the second period, Luke Moffatt (Paradise Valley, Ariz.) tied the game at 2-2 after some skillful puck-handling across the front of the net, bringing the puck into the bottom right corner of the Buckeye goal.
The second period contained three power-play goals, two of which were registered by Ohio State after Brown was assessed a five-minute major penalty for boarding. The two Buckeye power-play goals were a mere 16 seconds apart, bringing the score to 4-2.
Michigan answered with a power-play goal courtesy of Guptill when he received a pass from Moffie and snapped a shot from the right side, making the score 4-3.
After peppering Hunwick with numerous shots, OSU put another one on the board at 15:58 of the middle frame when Max McCormick flipped the puck into the left side of the goal under Hunwick, bringing the score to 5-3, where it remained for the rest of the period.
The Wolverines appeared to be picking up steam early in the third when Derek DeBlois (Narragansett, R.I.) netted a shorthanded breakaway goal at 1:44 with a wrist shot straight past a defenseless Cal Heeter, but 13 seconds into another U-M penalty kill, OSU's Lippincott slipped one past Hunwick to bring the score to 6-4 at 4:48.
With 1:40 left in the game, Guptill netted his second marker of the night with a short-side goal, but the Wolverines failed to make up the one-goal deficit in the time that remained.
Hunwick turned aside 31 of 37 shots on goal, while Heeter allowed five goals out of 31 shots.
The Wolverines return to game action on Friday (Nov. 25) when they face off against Northeastern at 7:35 p.m. at Yost Ice Arena.
