HACKENSACK, N.J. -- Senior pitcher Eric Katzman (Harrington Park, N.J./Northern Valley Old Tappan) of the University of Michigan baseball team was named the YMCA of Greater Bergen County College Athlete of the Year, the organization announced Wednesday (June 23). Katzman will be recognized during the 45th annual sports banquet on Nov. 23, 2010, at the Park Ridge Marriott.
Despite battling injuries for much of his senior campaign, Katzman turned in a 5-2 record with a 6.75 earned-run average. Two of Katzman's five starts in 2010 came on a Friday night, highlighted by a win over Ohio State on April 30 when he allowed one run over 5.1 innings.
As a junior, Katzman paced the Big Ten with just 65 hits allowed while tying for the team lead with seven wins. He finished his career with a 17-9 record and a 4.45 ERA. He struck out 134 batters over 166.0 innings of work, showing versatility with 28 starts and 34 relief appearances.
For the last 44 years, the YMCA of Greater Bergen County has been honoring the county's most outstanding high school, college, amateur and professional athletes, as well as coaches and other adults who have given exceptional service to young people. The annual banquet benefits the YMCA financial assistance fund, which allows deserving children and their families to benefit from the Y's healthy programs.
Katzman was also named to NorthJersey.com's High School All-Decade team for Bergen County.
