ANN ARBOR, Mich. C Jason Murray, who spent the past two seasons as an assistant coach on the staff of University of Michigan head baseball coach Rich Maloney, has been named head baseball coach at Charleston Southern University in Charleston, S.C.
Murray, 30, held the recruiting coordinator position and handled baseball operations for the Wolverines. He starts his position coaching the Buccaneers immediately.
Murray played for Maloney at Ball State earning letters with the Cardinals in 1996 and 1997. He hit .425 in 1997 and was an all-conference performer and he started his coaching career as a student assistant under Maloney at Ball State in1998.
Prior to joining the Michigan staff in 2003, Murray was a volunteer coach at Florida (2002) under head coach Pat McMahon. The Gators were 46-19 before losing in regional finals action that season.
Murray was an assistant coach at Rio Hondo College in Whittier, Calif., in 1999 and he served two seasons as an assistant coach at Winthrop University in Rock Hill, S.C. (2000-01). Winthrop was 48-16-1 and played in regional action in 2001.
Murray's departure opens an assistant coaching position on Maloney's staff.
