MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- University of Michigan senior/junior RHP Jim Brauer (Carmel, Ind./Carmel HS), sophomore 2B Chris Getz (Grosse Pointe, Mich./South HS) and senior designated hitter Brandon Roberts (Arlington, Texas/Martin HS) were named to the Big Ten's baseball all-conference first team for 2004. The announcement was made by the Big Ten during Michigan's 7-2 win over Penn State in Big Ten Tournament action Wednesday (May 26) at Siebert Field.
Brauer, who missed all but the first 4.2 innings of the 2003 season, bounced back this season and takes a 6-3 record and a 4.54 ERA into his tournament start against Ohio State on Thursday (May 27, 3:35 p.m. CDT).
Getz, who set a Big Ten record with 53 hits in conference-only action, and Roberts, who leads the Wolverines with a .371 average after going 3-for-4 vs. Penn State on Wednesday join Brauer as first-time first team selections.
Junior 1B Kyle Bohm (Stevens Point, Wis./Area HS), Michigan's Most Valuable Player, was named to the All-Big Ten second team along with junior/sophomore LHP Paul Hammond (Mason, Ohio/Mason HS). Hammond was 5-1 during the 2004 season and had the lowest opponent batting average in conference action (.192) in his first action after missing all of 2003 rehabbing from "Tommy John surgery."
Junior RF Matt Butler (Lombard, Ill./Driscoll Catholic), who leads the Wolverines with eight game-winning RBI, 16 stolen bases and 11 HBPs while hitting .316 with 44 RBI, was the lone Michigan player named to the All-Big Ten third team.
