DURHAM, N.C. -- The University of Michigan baseball team scored once in the seventh inning and twice in the eighth to beat Duke 9-8 Saturday (March 6) at Jack Coombs Field in a game delayed in its start for two hours by rain.
| | Tognetti allowed one hit and two walks in 3.2 scoreless innings to gain the victory. |
Bohm, in just his seventh game as a Wolverine, tied the school record with three doubles.
Junior RHP Phil Tognetti (Newhall, Calif./William S. Hart HS), the third Wolverine pitcher, slammed the door on the Blue Devils (7-6) as he pitched 3.2 innings of scoreless, one-hit relief as Duke led 8-6 after four innings.
The loss was the sixth by one run for Duke and the fourth straight loss for the Blue Devils. Sophomore RHP Derek Feldkamp (Adrian, Mich./Blissfield HS), who was the winning pitcher in the series opener at Duke, worked the final two innings for the save. Feldkamp, who sports a 1.00 ERA in three appearances, closed out the win in dramatic fashion, striking out pinch hitter Corey Whiting with runners on second and third.
The Wolverines grabbed a quick 2-0 lead off Duke pitcher/designated hitter Tim Layden as Butler walked on four pitches, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on Bohm's first double. Sophomore 3B A.J. Scheidt (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Lahser HS), who has four hits in the first two games of the series, drove in Bohm with a single to right.
Senior RHP Bobby Garza (Southgate, Mich./Anderson HS) started slowly, allowing a walk and a single before Layden stroked his third homer of the year, a three-run blast over the 375 sign in right-center.
The pumped-up Layden struck out the side in the top of the second and singled in the fourth Duke run off Garza in the bottom of the inning. Layden was 2-for-2 with a sacrifice fly and two walks and drove in five runs at the plate, but he lasted just three innings on the mound.
The Wolverines tied the game with a pair of runs in the third inning as sophomore 2B Chris Getz (Grosse Pointe, Mich./South HS) walked and reached second on a passed ball. Getz scored as freshman RF Brad Roblin (Wayland, Mass./River School) doubled in the left-center gap. Bohm singled in Roblin to make the score 4-4.
Michigan took a 6-4 lead in the fourth inning as freshman SS Leif Mahler (Columbus, Ohio/St. Charles Prep) walked and moved up a base on a single by sophomore LF Mike Schmidt (Saginaw, Mich./Heritage HS). Getz moved the runners up with an infield grounder and Butler singled to left-center for a 5-4 lead. With two outs Bohm doubled to right to drive in Schmidt, but Butler was thrown out at the plate to end the rally.
Freshman LHP Mike McCormick (Grand Blanc, Mich./Goodrich HS) was roughed up in the fourth inning, allowing four runs on three hits before Tognetti came in to close out the rally. Tognetti allowed a run-scoring single by Duke catcher Brian Hernandez in the fourth inning, but that was the 10th and final hit for the hosts for the rest of the game. The tandem of Tognetti and Feldkamp retired 16 of the final 20 batters, allowing just four runners -- all walks -- over the final 5.2 innings.
Bohm hit his third double of the game and barely missed hitting his first Wolverine home run with two outs in the seventh inning as his drive hit the wall in left. Scheidt, who shares the team RBI lead with Bohm, knocked in his sixth run with a single to right to make the score 8-7.
Senior DH Brandon Roberts (Arlington, Texas/Martin HS) started the winning rally in the eighth inning with a walk off Duke reliever Blake Walker. Roberts moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by pinch hitter Nick Rudden (Englewood, Colo./Cherry Creek HS), and he moved to third on an infield single by Schmidt.
Getz knocked in the tying run on a fielder's choice grounder and he moved to second on the first Wolverine stolen base of the season. Butler slammed a single to center to score Getz with the eventual game-winning run.
The Wolverines conclude the weekend series at Duke on Sunday (March 7) with junior RHP Michael Penn (Columbus, Ohio/Worthington Christian), who is 0-0 with a 3.60 ERA, on the mound.
