Maloney Adds Three Incoming Freshmen, Two Transfers

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan first-year baseball coach Rich Maloney has announced the addition of five players to join the Wolverines for the 2002-03 school year.

Maloney signed shortstop Jeremy Goldschmeding (Martin, Mich./Allegan HS), catcher Matt Rademacher (Bay City, Mich./Central HS) and outfielder Mike Schmidt (Saginaw, Mich./Heritage HS) as incoming freshmen.

Maloney also announced a pair of transfers coming to Michigan -- RHP Michael Penn (Columbus, Ohio/Worthington HS) from Ball State and LHP Drew Taylor (Toronto, Ontario/Upper Canada College) from Georgia Tech -- and under the one-time transfer rule both would be eligible to play as sophomores in 2003.

The newest Wolverines, the first signed by Maloney, join the players inked last November during the early signing period -- right-handed pitcher Derek Feldkamp (Adrian, Mich./Blissfield HS) and right-handed pitcher/outfielder Craig Murray (Park Ridge, Ill./Maine South HS).

"I'm very pleased with this group of incoming players and I'm impressed with their potential as student-athletes," said Maloney.

Goldschmeding hit .451 with 29 stolen bases while earning all-state honors and he hit eight homers. "Jeremy runs well, has power potential and owns a strong arm. He fits into our program well and he has a chance to become an outstanding player for us," said Maloney.

Rademacher, a first-team all-state selection, hit .548 with 12 extra-base hits and 31 RBI and played in the Dream Team all-star game at Comerica Park. "Matt is an outstanding catch-and-throw guy, who with some work could develop into an excellent hitter," said Maloney.

Schmidt, who also saw action in the all-star game at Comerica Park, hit .575 as a senior with 10 homers and a 1.103 slugging percentage. "Mike was heavily recruited by several outstanding programs. He has excellent power and he runs well. He will have a chance to hit in the heart of our lineup as a freshman."

The third November signee, Joe McSoley, a middle infielder from Indianapolis, Ind., requested and was given his release.

Infielder Jeremy Goldschmeding, an honor roll student who also played quarterback at Allegan, hit .451 with as a senior and earned all-state honors. He set the school single-season record with 11 doubles as a senior and he set school career records for hits (110), triples (5) and batting average (.431).

Catcher Matt Rademacher, a two-time selection for the Bay City Times Dream Team, threw out more than half the potential base stealers in his high school career. A four-year honor roll student, his career stats include a .415 batting average, six homers and 101 RBI.

Outfielder Mike Schmidt was the Saginaw Valley League MVP as a senior. A member of National Honor Society, he had a .715 on-base percentage as a senior. He slugged 19 homers and had 89 RBI in his two varsity seasons and he was a two-time selection for the Bay City Times Dream Team.

RHP Michael Penn, who pitched for Maloney at Ball State, was 1-1 with an 8.01 ERA and 27 strikeouts for the Cardinals in 2002. His total of 30.1 innings ranks second on Michigan's returning pitching staff. Penn was a two-time team MVP at Worthington Christian HS.

LHP Drew Taylor, son of former Major League pitcher Ron Taylor, was 0-0 in 11 appearances, including one start, and had a 7.71 ERA at Georgia Tech in 2002.
