COMSTOCK PARK, Mich. -- Notre Dame scored five runs in the second through the fourth innings to take the early lead and went on to beat Michigan 9-1 Tuesday night (May 1) in Old Kent Park outside Grand Rapids in the annual "Baseball Bash." The Fighting Irish, listed No. 2 in the Baseball Weekly/ESPN Coaches Poll and No. 1 in two other rankings, improved to 41-6-1, while the Wolverines dropped to 22-19.
Irish RHP Peter Ogilvie (4-1) worked a complete-game five-hitter to record the win. Wolverines freshman RHP Jim Brauer (Carmel, Ind./Carmel HS) worked the first five innings, allowed five runs (four earned) and took the loss, dropping his record to 3-2. Notre Dame added four runs in the seventh off junior LHP Kirk Taylor (Farmington Hills, Mich./North Farmington HS) for the final margin.
Michigan scored in the first inning as senior 2B Scott Tousa (Dallas, Texas/Lake Highlands HS) led off with his first of three singles. After Tousa was forced at second base by junior/sophomore DH Mike Sokol (Sterling Heights, Mich./DeLaSalle HS), sophomore 3B Brock Koman (Pueblo, Colo./South HS) doubled in the rightfield corner with Sokol moving to third base. Sokol scored on a sacrifice fly by sophomore RF Gino Lollio (Cape Coral, Fla./Mariner HS), but Koman was called out for leaving second base too early to end the inning.
Tousa ended the game 3-for-4 and Koman was 2-for-3 as the two accounted for all five Wolverine hits.
Michigan will face the University of Detroit Wednesday (May 2, 3 p.m.) at Ray Fisher Stadium with senior RHP Vince Pistilli (Highland, Ind./Highland HS) scheduled to start on the mound for the Wolverines. Pistilli is 1-2 with a 9.12 ERA.
