LAWRENCE, Kan. -- Sophomore 3B Brock Koman (Pueblo, Colo./South HS) and sophomore CF Gino Lollio (Cape Coral, Fla./Mariner HS) provided the offense and junior RHP Bobby Korecky (Saline, Mich./Saline HS) notched his second straight complete game in Saturday's (March 17) 8-2 University of Michigan baseball win over Kansas.
The Wolverines (6-7) dropped Saturday's first game to Illinois-Chicago by an identical 8-2 margin in a scheduled seven-inning makeup contest from Friday (March 16).
Koman and Lollio combined for eight of Michigan's 10 hits in the win. Koman was 4-for-5 and collected two doubles, belted his first career homer and knocked in five of Michigan's runs. Koman, who leads the Wolverines in hits (22), runs scored (11), doubles (8) and RBI (15), has at least one hit in 12 of the 13 games played this season. It was Koman's third career four-hit game. Lollio picked up the first four-hit game of his career in the nightcap.
Korecky (2-1) lowered his ERA to 2.56 by tossing the six-hitter, the seventh complete game of his career. Korecky allowed the host Jayhawks (11-10) single runs in the first and the seventh innings while Michigan scored runs in six of the nine innings. Korecky had four 1-2-3 innings and retired nine Jayhawks in a row twice during the game.
Senior LHP Nick Alexander (Alpena, Mich./Alpena HS) took the loss in the opener, allowing three runs in the first 4.2 innings. Alexander is 1-2.
Junior/sophomore Nate Wright (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew HS) saw his first action of the season at first base and had 27 putouts in the two games, including 18 against Kansas. Wright was 3-for-3 against "hometown" foe UIC.
Michigan (6-7) closes out the weekend action in Lawrence, Kan., on Sunday morning (March 18, 11 a.m. CST), facing host Kansas. Freshman RHP Jim Brauer (Carmel, Ind./Carmel HS), who is 0-0 with a 3.72 ERA and one save in three appearances thus far in 2001, is the scheduled starter.
