Wolverines Finish Eighth at Texas Invitational

AUSTIN, Texas -- The No. 9-ranked University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team concluded competition at the Texas Invitational on Sunday afternoon (Dec. 2) in eighth place. The Wolverines scored 252 points while Texas amassed 669 points to lead the 13-team field at the Lee and Joe Jamail Swim Center.

In the 200-yard backstroke, the Wolverines placed three swimmers among the top 20. Junior Ryan Earhart (Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Xavier HS) led the way for the Maize and Blue in 11th with a time of 1:48.44, followed by freshmen Chuck Sayao (Mississauga, Ontario/Cawthra Park HS) and Mike Galindo (Washington, D.C./Gonzaga College). Sayao placed 14th (1:49.39) and Galindo was 19th (1:50.23).
Michigan also earned a top-10 finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:01.81. Members of the relay team included junior Garrett Mangieri (Old Tappan, N.J./Mercersburg Academy, Pa.), sophomore Dan Ketchum (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore HS), senior Jordan Watland (Excelsior, Minn./Minnetonka HS) and junior Tony Kurth (Toledo, Ohio/St. Frances de Sales HS).
In the first event of the finals, Ketchum and freshman Andrew Hurd (Oakville, Ontario/Trafalger HS) swam consideration times in the 1,650-yard freestyle. Hurd finished fourth (15:15.83), followed by Ketchum in fifth (15:20.14).
The Wolverines' next meet will be on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 4-5, when they travel to the desert to face Arizona and Arizona State in dual meets.
