ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's golf team sits in a tie for fifth at its own Wolverine North Invitational after the first two rounds held Saturday (Sept. 23) at the U-M Golf Course. The Wolverines opened the tournament with a season-best 289 to put them in second place after the first round, but a 299 second-round total dropped U-M into a tie for fifth with a 588 team total after day one. Michigan is tied with Detroit-Mercy, which fired team totals of 299 and 289.
Michigan redshirt freshman Scott Carlton (Brighton, Mich./Brighton HS), making his collegiate debut for the Wolverines, is tied for 10th after shooting a two-under-par 69 in the first round and following that with a 76 in the second for a 145 total. Teammate Scott Hayes (Rochester, Mich./Rochester HS) also is tied for 10th after carding rounds of 71 and 74.
Minnesota sits atop the Wolverine North leaderboard after firing rounds of 285 and 289 for a 574 team total. The Golden Gophers have a three-shot lead over Miami of Ohio (290-287/577), and Toledo (296-286/582) sits in third.
Minnesota's Wilhelm Schauman holds a three-stroke lead in the individual standings after firing back-to-back rounds of 67 for a 134 first-day total. Miami's Lee Curry (68-69/137) is second and Eastern Michigan's Jaysen Hansen (70-69/139) is third.
The Wolverine North Invitational concludes Sunday (Sept. 24) with an 8 a.m. tee time start for the final round at the U-M Golf Course.
