WEST COLUMBIA, S.C. -- Behind a steady three rounds from Nilay Naik and a strong final-round push, the University of Michigan men's golf team closed the Bryan Bros Collegiate tied for 11th on Tuesday (Sept. 29) at Solina Golf Club. The Wolverines posted their best round of the tournament with a 288 (+4) to finish with an 873 54-hole total.
After a weekend away from competition, Michigan returned for the fourth of its seven fall events. Naik opened with a 70 (-1), while RJ Arone added a 72 (+1) as the Wolverines posted a first-round 290 and positioned themselves 12th. U-M headed back out for its second round, but darkness halted play with three to four holes remaining.
Back on the course Tuesday morning, Michigan completed its second round with a 295 and found itself 14th with 18 holes remaining. The Wolverines responded with their best round of the tournament. Arone fired a 70 (-1), Spencer Shropshire added an even-par 71 and Naik posted his second straight 72 (+1), helping U-M card a 288 (+4) and climb three spots into a tie for 11th at 873 (+21).
For the second time this season, Naik paced the Wolverines, tying for 26th at 214 (+1). After opening with a 70 (-1), highlighted by a two-under 32 on his opening nine, Naik followed with consecutive 72s. In his final round, he found himself four over through three holes before playing his final 15 holes three under to close at 214.
Arone saved his best golf for the final nine holes. After making the turn two over in his final round, he opened the back nine with three straight birdies, added another at No. 15 and came home in three-under 34 for a 70 (-1). The closing round moved him into a tie for 46th at 218.
Dean Muratore tied for 61st at 220, while Shropshire tied for 66th at 222. Mackey Beckett rounded out the Wolverine lineup, tying for 77th at 226.
In a unique twist to the fall season, the Wolverines will travel alongside the U-M women's golf team to Dublin, Ohio, for the Barbara Nicklaus Cup, Monday and Tuesday (Oct. 5-6). Hosted by Ohio State at famed Muirfield Village Golf Club, the four-team match-play event gives each program three matches, with the best overall record claiming the Nicklaus Cup. Michigan and Ohio State will be joined by Charlotte and Clemson.
