DUBLIN, Ohio -- The University of Michigan men's golf team battled deep into the closing holes throughout the opening day of the Barbara Nicklaus Cup, but the Wolverines were unable to turn several late opportunities into victories, falling to Clemson 3.5-2.5 and host Ohio State 5-1 on Monday (Oct. 5) at Muirfield Village Golf Club.
Freshman Mackey Beckett highlighted the day for Michigan, going unbeaten in his first two collegiate match-play contests. After earning a hard-fought halve against Clemson in the morning, Beckett returned in the afternoon to post a 3-and-1 victory over Ohio State's Joe Wilson IV.
Michigan's opening match against Clemson remained unsettled deep into the closing holes. The Wolverines collected victories from sophomore Jordan Hwang and junior Nilay Naik, while Beckett added a half point after going all 18 holes. With four of the six matches reaching at least the 17th hole, U-M remained within striking distance before Clemson secured the narrow victory late.
Hwang provided Michigan's most decisive point of the morning, defeating Rich Wills 4-and-3 while Naik posted a 2-and-1 victory over Oscar Holm-Bredkjaer. Beckett's back-and-forth match with Biagio Gagliardi went the distance before the two finished all square.
Clemson earned its margin in the remaining three matches, all of which extended deep into the back nine. Junior Dean Muratore took Gabriel Holtz to the 18th before falling 1-up, while freshman Spencer Shropshire also reached the final hole before Daniel McBrien secured a 2-up victory. Hampton Roberts closed out junior RJ Arone 2-and-1 on the 17th to give Clemson the 3.5-2.5 decision.
Beckett carried his strong play into the afternoon against Ohio State. He won the opening hole against Wilson and quickly built a 2-up advantage through three. After Wilson battled back to square the match following the eighth, Beckett regained the lead at No. 13 and never looked back. He moved 2-up with a par at No. 16 before winning the 17th to close out his 3-and-1 victory and finish the day with a 1-0-1 record.
Despite the final 5-1 score, Michigan had opportunities in several other afternoon matches. Hwang showed some fight after falling 3-down through six against Giedrius Mackelis. He worked the deficit back to 1-down after 12 and kept the match alive through the 18th before Mackelis escaped with a 1-up victory.
Muratore also went the distance against Vaughn Harber. After falling 2-down through eight, Muratore twice cut the deficit to one on the back nine before Harber secured the 2-up victory at the 18th.
Arone grabbed an early 2-up advantage against Jack Vojtko before the match turned on the back nine, with Vojtko winning three consecutive holes at Nos. 12-14 on his way to a 3-and-2 victory. Naik also held an early lead against Tyler Sabo before Sabo rallied for a 3-and-2 win. Ohio State's Timotej Formanek added a 6-and-4 victory over Shropshire to complete the Buckeyes' victory.
Michigan (0-2) will close the Barbara Nicklaus Cup on Tuesday (Oct. 6), facing unbeaten Charlotte (2-0) at 7:45 a.m. off the 10th tee. The 49ers will look to complete a perfect 3-0 record and claim the Nicklaus Cup.
