DUBLIN, Ohio -- Freshman Mackey Beckett completed an unbeaten collegiate match-play debut, while the University of Michigan men's golf team picked up three total match wins to battle Charlotte to a 3-3 tie Tuesday (Oct. 6) in the final round of the Barbara Nicklaus Cup at Muirfield Village Golf Club.
Beckett, freshman Spencer Shropshire and junior Dean Muratore supplied the Wolverines' three points as Michigan closed the two-day event with a 0-2-1 record. Charlotte finished atop the standings at 2-0-1 to claim the Nicklaus Cup, followed by Clemson (2-1), Ohio State (1-2) and U-M.
After going 1-0-1 during Monday's opening two matches, Beckett capped his first collegiate match-play event with a 2-and-1 victory over Alex Bock. Beckett grabbed the early advantage and spent much of the match in front, building his lead to as many as three holes before closing out Bock on the 17th. The victory gave Beckett a team-best 2-0-1 record, making him the only Wolverine to go unbeaten over the three matches.
Shropshire followed a similar path against Lake Williams. After taking control early, the freshman maintained the advantage throughout much of the match before securing his first match-play victory as a Wolverine 2-and-1.
Muratore delivered Michigan's most decisive point of the morning against Daniel Boone. The junior quickly established control and continued to extend his advantage, eventually building a five-hole cushion before ending the match on the 15th for a 5-and-3 victory.
With those three victories secured, the team result came down to Michigan's remaining matches. Sophomore Jordan Hwang took Chase Cline all the way to the 18th before Cline escaped with a 1-up victory. Charlotte also received a 6-and-4 win from Frazer Jones over junior RJ Arone and a 5-and-4 victory from Seb Cave over junior Nilay Naik, leaving the team match even at 3-3.
Michigan finished the Nicklaus Cup with five individual victories and three halves across its three matches. Beckett led the Wolverines at 2-0-1, while Hwang, Muratore, Naik and Shropshire each earned a victory.
The Wolverines return to tournament action Monday through Wednesday (Oct. 12-14), heading to the Sunshine State for The Bryson, hosted by Charleston. The three-day, 54-hole event will be played at Trump National Doral in Miami, Fla.
