TOLEDO, Ohio -- Closing with its tournament-best round of 291 (+7), the University of Michigan men's golf team posted an 888 total Tuesday (Sept. 15) to finish 14th at the Inverness Intercollegiate at Inverness Club.
Playing in its third straight weekend event, Michigan opened with a 295 behind junior Nilay Naik's 69 (-2). With Inverness set up with challenging pins, the Wolverines posted a 302 in the second round and sat 14th with a 597 two-day total. Led by freshman Spencer Shropshire's even-par 71 and classmate Mackey Beckett's 72 (+1), U-M closed with a 291 to remain 14th with its 888 54-hole total.
For a second straight event, junior RJ Arone paced the Wolverines, sandwiching rounds of 73 (+2) around a second-round 74 (+3) to tie for 26th at 220. Naik followed, tying for 45th with a 222 total.
Beckett made a strong move in the final round, climbing 11 spots on the leaderboard with his 72. He tied for 67th at 226 (79-75-72). Shropshire closed with an even-par 71 and tied for 71st at 227 (76-80-71). Junior Dean Muratore rounded out the Wolverine lineup, tying for 78th at 229 (77-75-77).
After three straight fall weekends of competition, the Wolverines will take a week off before returning to action at the Bryan Bros Collegiate in Solina, S.C. The two-day, 54-hole event will be held Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 28-29, at Solina Country Club.
