YPSILANTI, Mich. -- Senior co-captain Mike Cervenak (New Boston, Mich./Dearborn Divine Child HS) knocked in six of the University of Michigan baseball team's seven runs in a 7-5 win over cross-county rival Eastern Michigan on Tuesday (May 11) in U-M's final non-conference game of the regular season. The win gave Michigan (28-24) the "Washtenaw County" series victory over the Eagles in 1999, three wins to one.
Cervenak, who set Michigan's career hit record Sunday (May 9) vs. Indiana, padded his record with three hits vs. Eastern Michigan (20-28-1) and added a career-best six RBIs. He launched a two-run double off the top of the fence in left in the first inning to notch his 21st career game-winning RBI.
Cervenak added another two-run double in the fifth inning and closed out Michigan's scoring in the seventh inning with a two-run single. The pair of doubles pushed Cervenak's career doubles record at Michigan to 59 and moved his fourth-best career RBI total to 172.
Wolverine junior RF Jay Dines (Albuquerque, N.M./Sandia HS) made his first start wearing uniform No. 8 and stroked his third homer of the year in the fourth inning. It was the lone run not driven in by Cervenak. Dines switched from No. 33 to No. 8 when Don Lund's No. 33 was retired Sunday afternoon (May 9) at Fisher Stadium.
Senior RHP Ryan Kelley (Northville, Mich./Dearborn Divine Child HS) pitched the first five innings to collect the win and move his record to 3-0.
The Eagles scored three times in the bottom of the ninth as the first five hitters singled, but freshman RHP Bobby Korecky (Saline, Mich./Saline HS) settled down to get the last two Eagles. Michigan's defense picked up an '8-6-2' play -- CF Brian Bush (Warren, Ohio/Howland HS) to SS Bill LaRosa (Rochester, Mich./Adams HS) to C David Parrish (Yorba Linda, Calif./Esperanza HS) -- in the middle of EMU's ninth inning for a rally-killing out.
Craig Foddrill led EMU with a 3-for-5 game that included a double in the sixth and a run-scoring single in the ninth.
Michigan (14-10 Big Ten) closes out the regular season with a four-game weekend series vs. Penn State (May 14-16). The Wolverines enter weekend action in third place, with the top four teams making the Big Ten playoffs, which start Thursday, May 20, at the site of the regular-season champ (Ohio State's magic number to clinch is two over Minnesota).
