HOMESTEAD, Fla. -- Southern Illinois silenced the University of Michigan baseball team's bats and handed the Wolverines a 6-0 defeat on Sunday (March 14) in the last of U-M's three games in Florida. The Wolverines dropped to 5-6 on the season, with the Salukis improving to 10-3.
SIU pitchers Jason Frasor (2-0) and Pat Hon combined on a five-hitter, allowing the Wolverines just five singles and no more than one hit in an inning. The Salukis got all the runs they would need in the second as they scored twice, aided by two Michigan errors and a wild pitch. SIU added one run in the fourth, one in the eighth and two in the ninth to halt Michigan's modest two-game winning streak.
Michigan senior second baseman Bobby Scales (Roswell, Ga./Milton HS) extended his 1999 hitting streak to 11 games with a sixth-inning single. Senior Brian Bush (Warren, Mich./Howland HS) also picked up a single and has now hit safely in his last six games.
Wolverine starter Bryan Cranson (Bronson, Mich./Bronson HS) suffered his third loss in as many decisions this season, going four innings and allowing six hits and three runs (two earned).
Next up for U-M is the Continental Classic, hosted by Texas A&M in College Station, Texas, next weekend. The Wolverines will play six games in the tournament, beginning with a 1 p.m. CST game Friday (March 19) against Cal State-Northridge.
