SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- The University of Michigan baseball team scored five times in the third inning on the way to an 8-1 thrashing of the University of San Diego on Friday (Feb. 26) in the Wolverines' season opener. It marked the first season-opening win for fourth-year U-M head coach Geoff Zahn. San Diego dropped to 7-5 on the season.
Michigan's 14-hit attack included three home runs, backing a combined four-hitter by three Wolverine pitchers. Junior/sophomore Bryce Ralston (Tacoma, Wash./Curtis HS) picked up the victory, allowing two hits and the lone Toreros run while fanning three in five innings of work.
Senior first baseman Bryan Besco (Westland, Mich./John Glenn HS) highlighted Michigan's five-run third inning with his 25th career homer, a two-run shot to right.
Senior captain Mike Cervenak (New Boston, Mich./Divine Child HS) smacked his 22nd career home run in the ninth inning and added a single and a double for a 3-for-5 day at the plate. Senior outfielder Jason Alcaraz (Albuquerque, N.M./Eldorado HS) collected four singles in five at bats for the third four-hit game of his U-M career.
Michigan and San Diego will continue their three-game series with a 1 p.m. PST contest Saturday (Feb. 27) at Cunningham Stadium.
