ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's gymnastics team will be represented by graduate student Carly Bauman and sophomore Sophia Diaz at the NCAA Championships in Fort Worth, Texas, on Thursday (April 16), where both will compete for individual national titles.
Bauman secured her spot on balance beam with a 9.900 qualifying score, while Diaz advanced on uneven bars after posting a 9.875.
Bauman, the Big Ten Specialist of the Year, recently earned her fourth career All-Big Ten recognition, including three first-team honors after previously being named to the second team in 2023. Competing in three events during her sixth season, she claimed 10 individual titles -- two on uneven bars, two on balance beam and six on floor exercise. She earned Big Ten Specialist of the Week twice this season, bringing her career total to five, and recorded 14 scores of 9.900 or higher. That includes 9.900-plus marks in seven of her final eight floor routines of the regular season. Bauman was named an AAI Award finalist on March 18 and owns a career-best 9.975 on each of her three events, including one on floor in 2026.
Diaz picked up her second career second-team All-Big Ten honor after also earning the distinction as a freshman. She competed on vault, uneven bars and floor throughout the season, earning one event title on both vault and floor. Diaz posted 11 scores of 9.900 or better, highlighted by six such marks in her final seven floor routines. The Clarksville, Md., native opened the season with a career-high 9.925 on uneven bars and matched her career-best 9.925 on floor in three of the last five meets.
Bauman and Diaz will learn their rotation assignments on Tuesday (April 7).
