ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan softball team was doomed by the long ball in a 13-2, five-inning loss to rival Ohio State in the series finale Sunday (April 12) in front of 2,049 fans at the Wilpon Complex, home of Alumni Field at Carol Hutchins Stadium. The loss prevented a sweep for Michigan, which clinched its third straight Big Ten Conference series with Saturday's win.
With a brisk wind blowing out, Ohio State hit seven home runs, with two in the first inning, three in the second and two more in the third, to build a significant and insurmountable early lead. Home runs accounted for all 13 of the Buckeyes' runs.
Michigan threatened in the first inning with a pair of baserunners and no outs, but strikeouts stymied the Wolverines' rally, including three in the first frame and one apiece in the second and third. U-M stranded seven runners over five innings.
The Wolverines plated two runs in the third on back-to-back solo home runs with two outs from Lauren Putz and Erin Hoehn. Putz homered to left-center field for her team-best 15th of the season, while Hoehn followed six pitches later, connecting on a full-count offering and driving it just fair down the left-field line for her fifth home run this spring.
Michigan could not capitalize on a leadoff single in the fourth, then loaded the bases after a single and back-to-back hit batters in the fifth, but a groundout to third ended the game.
The Wolverines used four pitchers over five innings. Grayson LaMarche (4-3) started and took the loss, allowing two runs on four hits before recording an out in the first. Kat Meyers was the most effective for Michigan, entering with one out in the second and not allowing a run over the next 2.2 innings, striking out four while scattering three hits and one walk.
The Wolverines (26-15, 6-9 Big Ten) will begin a five-game road week Tuesday (April 14) when they travel to Mount Pleasant, Mich., to face in-state rival Central Michigan at 4 p.m. at Margo Jonker Stadium.
