MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. -- The University of Michigan softball team flexed some power, posting two home runs and two triples to secure an 8-1 midweek win over in-state foe Central Michigan on Tuesday afternoon (April 14) at Margo Jonker Stadium.
Michigan used small ball to score its first run in the opening frame, then the extra-base hits to add two more in the second and five in the sixth.
Senior second baseman Indiana Langford and junior centerfielder Jenissa Conway led off the game with a bloop single and bunt single, respectively, and after a hit-by-pitch loaded the bases, Langford scored on a sac fly to center, sliding to beat the tag at the plate.
Senior third baseman Maddie Erickson led off the second with a solo homer to left centerfield -- her fifth long ball of the season -- and after senior first baseman Madi Ramey reached with a bloop single, Conway plated her with a roped triple to the wall in right centerfield. With her seventh three-bagger this season, she retook a share of the top spot among the national leaders in the category.
The Wolverines broke it open with five runs in the sixth. U-M used three straight free passes to load the bases with one out and after a pitching change, sophomore rightfielder Lauren Putz hammered a grand slam into the trees beyond the centerfield wall for her team-best 16th home run this season. Redshirt junior catcher Lilly Vallimont banged an RBI triple off the top of the rightfield wall three batters later -- her second three-bagger of the season and U-M's second of the game.
CMU staved off the run rule with a two-out solo homer in the sixth inning and put a runner on base in the seventh before Michigan closed out the game with a fielder's choice and final-out punchout.
Sophomore RHP Kat Meyers (6-3) earned the victory in relief, allowing the one run on six hits and no walks with a pair of strikeouts over six innings.
The Wolverines (27-15) will host Bowling Green at 4 p.m. tomorrow (Wednesday, April 15) for its second straight midweek contest at the Wilpon Complex, home of Carol Hutchins Stadium and Alumni Field. Since the game was a schedule addition, admission is free, and it will be streamed on B1G+.
