ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan softball head coach Bonnie Tholl announced Tuesday (June 23) the addition of two transfers in infielder Kira Day and catcher Abby Ptak to the Wolverine program. Day joins Michigan after two seasons at Idaho State, while Ptak comes to Ann Arbor after two seasons at Boston College; both will have multiple years of eligibility remaining in maize and blue.
"We're thrilled to welcome Kira and Abby to Michigan," said Tholl. "Kira is a jack-of-all-trades defender who swings a big bat. She is athletic in every sense of the word and someone we identified immediately that would help elevate our program. Abby is coming off an outstanding season; she was incredibly productive as an ACC performer, and I believe that she can be a dominant force in the Big Ten as well. We look forward to Abby bringing her game experience to Michigan softball. Beyond their talent on the field, both are thoughtful, intelligent women who will give to this Michigan experience."
A native of Phoenix, Ariz., Day joins the Wolverines after helping Idaho State to back-to-back Big Sky Conference regular-season championships, including a trip to the program's first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance this past season. She batted .324 in 2026 and led the Bengals with a .771 slugging percentage on 20 extra-base hits, including 13 home runs. She prepped at Cactus Shadows High School and played travel ball for the Arizona Hotshots, helping the program to a TCS World Series championship in 2023 and PGF 18U Platinum National championship in 2024.
Ptak, a native of Manvel, Texas, earned NFCA All-Region second-team honors this past season after leading Boston College in batting average (.375), doubles (14) and hits (60) as a sophomore. She started all 51 games behind the plate, adding a triple and five home runs while playing errorless defense and throwing out 11 baserunners. Her 14 doubles tied for third in program history, while her .375 average ranks eighth in a single season in BC history. She prepped at Alvin High School and played travel softball for Impact Gold Jackson before beginning her collegiate career.
