Michigan Rallies Late to Top Oakland in Midweek Matchup

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan softball team used a clutch late push at the plate, scoring three runs in the bottom of the sixth to pull away from Oakland and secure a 6-5 midweek victory on Wednesday evening (April 1) at the Wilpon Complex, home of Carol Hutchins Stadium and Alumni Field.
The Wolverines (21-13) trailed for all but the final five outs of the contest, when sophomore right fielder Lauren Putz smashed a line-drive three-run homer into the grandstand beyond right-center field to give U-M its first lead in the sixth inning.
The top of the Michigan lineup came through with one out in the frame. Senior left fielder Indiana Langford reached on her third infield single of the game, and junior center fielder Jenissa Conway ripped a single through the right side to put two aboard for Putz, who recorded her 13th home run of the season with the three-run shot. She went 2-for-4 with two runs and three RBI in the game.
Oakland (15-13) plated three runs in the first and two in the third to build a 5-3 lead through the early innings. Sophomore right-handed pitcher Haley Ferguson (2-1) entered with the bases loaded and one out in the third and was stout for the remainder of the game to earn the victory in relief. She allowed no runs on just two hits and a walk over the final 4.2 innings.
The Wolverines will hit the road for their next series, traveling to Rosemont, Ill., for a three-game set against Northwestern from Friday through Sunday (April 3-5) at the Ballpark at Rosemont.
