
McFarland Claims Bronze in Mile, Becomes U-M's First NCAA Individual Medalist Since 2021

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -- Trent McFarland of the University of Michigan men's track and field team captured bronze in the mile run at the NCAA Indoor Championships on Saturday (March 14) at the Randal Tyson Track Center to close out the Wolverines' indoor season. The Wolverines tied for 26th overall with 11 points.The junior started the race at the back of the pack, sitting in seventh place after the first lap before moving into sixth after the second lap. McFarland fell to ninth at the halfway point, staying in the bottom three and then dropping into 10th heading into the final lap.
McFarland turned the burners on the backstretch, running the fastest final lap of the field (26.35 seconds) and moving up to finish in third with a time of 3:59.45.
The Utica, Mich., native earned a first team All-America citation for his performance and scored six points for the Wolverines. The honor is his second of the weekend, with the distance medley relay team of Brendan Herger, Miles Brown, Camden Law and McFarland picking up first team All-America honors after a fourth-place finish on Friday.
McFarland is the team's first indoor medalist since Ayden Owens took bronze in the heptathlon in 2021.
The Maize and Blue will open the outdoor slate at the UCF Black & Gold Invitational in Orlando, Fla., on Friday and Saturday (March 20-21) at the UCF Track and Field Complex.
