ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The defending national champion University of Michigan men's basketball team continues its preseason schedule Friday (Oct. 16), hosting Oregon State at Crisler Center. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m., with the exhibition streamed live on B1G+ and produced by Michigan's StudentU broadcast team.
• Michigan opened its exhibition schedule with an 87-62 victory over Eastern Michigan on Sunday (Oct. 11) at Crisler Center. Trey McKenney led the Wolverines with 21 points, including three three-pointers, while Quinn Costello added 16 points off the bench, connecting on a team-high four triples. J.P. Estrella chipped in 14 points as six Wolverines scored in double figures.
• Seven newcomers saw action against Eastern Michigan, with six scoring. Jalen Reed also returned to game action for the first time since suffering an Achilles injury at LSU in November 2025, a span of 317 days. Reed finished with one point and one blocked shot.
• Friday's exhibition marks Justin Joyner's return to Crisler Center after two seasons as a Michigan assistant coach. Joyner helped the Wolverines compile a 64-13 record during his tenure, highlighted by the 2026 national championship, a Big Ten regular-season title and back-to-back Big Ten Tournament championship-game appearances.
• Joyner was named Oregon State's 23rd head coach in March while Michigan was preparing for its NCAA Tournament run. He remained with the Wolverines throughout the postseason, helping Michigan capture the national championship before transitioning to Oregon State full time.
• Friday's matchup reunites two members of Michigan's national championship coaching staff, with Mike Boynton Jr. leading the Wolverines and Joyner entering his first season at Oregon State. Both served as assistants on Michigan's 37-3 championship team before becoming head coaches following the season.
• Joyner helped Michigan complete a two-year turnaround from an eight-win season in 2023-24 to 27 victories, a Big Ten Tournament title and a Sweet 16 appearance in 2024-25. The following season, the Wolverines set a program record with 37 wins, finished 19-1 in Big Ten play and captured the program's second NCAA championship.
• Michigan and Oregon State have met four times in regular-season play, with the all-time series tied 2-2. The programs last met Dec. 4, 1990, when Michigan defeated No. 19 Oregon State 68-57.
• Following Friday's matchup, Michigan will close its exhibition schedule against Houston in The Battleground 2k26 on Sunday (Oct. 25) at Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids. The Wolverines open the 2026-27 regular season Monday, Nov. 2, against Oakland at Crisler Center.
